Sunday 31st August

Eyebrook Res: 2 juv Whinchats on Leics side of the inflow near the fence, also Cattle Egret still around the inflow. Wader totals: 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 13 Ruff, 1 Dunlin, 1 Redshank & 6 Common Sandpipers. Female Red-crested Pochard still between the south-west corner and the dam. NB reports on the national news services of a Curlew Sandpiper today and yesterday are assumed to refer to a rather long-billed Dunlin, unless anyone has photographic evidence to the contrary. The bird present (and photographed) early on Friday morning was not seen again that day, and hasn’t been seen since by any of the Eyebrook regulars despite plenty of people looking.

Eyebrook Res: juv Black Tern this morning, also Cattle Egret, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 8 Ruff, 5 Common Sandpipers, 2 Ringed Plovers, 4 LRPs, 1 Dunlin & female Red-crested Pochard still.

Rutland Water: Black Tern still, South Arm 3.

Eyebrook Res: juv Curlew Sandpiper early morning only,  Whinchat, 9 Ruff, 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Dunlin, 4 LRPs & 1 Redshank.

Rutland Water: Black Tern still, South Arm 3.

Swithland Res: 4 Greenshanks & 1 Common Sandpiper, north side.

Thursday 28th August

Rutland Water: 2 Garganey, 6 Greenshanks & 7 Ruff, South Arm 3; Wood Sandpiper & Bittern, Lagoon 3.

Tuesday 26th August

Eyebrook Res: 3 Little Stints at the inflow, also 10 Ruff & 4 Dunlin.

Stanford Res (permit holders only): 15 Whimbrel flew through this morning.

Aylestone Meadows: 4 Crossbills flew south  this morning.

Monday 25th August

Swithland Res: Turnstone flew along the dam, also 4 Greenshanks.

Lea Wood: 2 Glossy Ibis flew north-west at 11:50.

Eyebrook Res: 2 juv Little Gulls at the inflow late afternoon, also 12 Ruff & 4 Dunlin.

Rutland Water: Wood Sandpiper & Black Tern, Lapwing hide; 2 Turnstones, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: Sanderling, 3 Dunlin, 15 Ruff, 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Ringed Plover & female Red-crested Pochard, also Whimbrel heard early morning.

Aylestone Meadows: Whinchat, Biam Paddocks this morning.

Cossington Meadows: male and female Redstart still in bushes between north-east edge of Plover Meadow and Lower Moor. Ringed Plover, Hobley Lake.

Stanford Res (permit holders only): 2 Black Terns, Ruff, Ringed Plover, 5 Common Sandpipers & 1 Whinchat.

Monday 18th August

Eyebrook Res: 7 juv Little Gulls at the inflow this morning, also Cattle Egret still; 1 Greenshank, 3 Ruff, 6 Black-tailed Godwits, 1 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpipers, 5 Ringed Plovers & female Red-crested Pochard.

Rutland Water: Garganey, North Arm.

Swithland Res: juv Arctic Tern on the north side from the dam.

Sunday 17th August

Eyebrook Res: juv Black Tern at the inflow, also Wood Sandpiper & juv Cattle Egret still, 1 Greenshank, 3 Ruff,  10 Black-tailed Godwits & 1 LRP.

Cossington Meadows: 2 Redstarts still along fence between NE corner of Plover Meadow and Lower Moor, viewed from the main track.

Saturday 16th August

Eyebrook Res: Wood Sandpiper at the inflow.

Rutland Water: Wood Sandpiper, North Arm.

Cossington Meadows: 2 Redstarts (1 male) at the north-east edge of Plover Meadow in hawthorns and along the fence, viewed from the metal gate on the main track. Also possibly a third bird calling to the north of there. 2 Green Sandpipers, Middle Marsh.

Shawell Sand Pit: female Ferruginous Duck of unknown origin still from Gibbet Lane.

Thursday 14th August

Eyebrook Res: Wood Sandpiper and Cattle Egret at the inflow, also 2+ Greenshanks, Curlew, 12 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Ruff, 4 Dunlin & 5 Ringed Plovers.

Also a pair of Swarovski NL Pure 8×42 binoculars has been added to the For Sale page, along with some free British Birds magazines.

Wednesday 13th August

Eyebrook Res: no sign of White-winged Black Tern today. 2 Cattle Egrets at the inflow; Wood Sandpiper at the island, 10 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Ruff, 3 Dunlin, 1 Curlew, 6 Ringed Plovers & up to 7 Greenshanks.

Rutland Water: Wood Sandpiper, North Arm.

Tuesday 12th August

Eyebrook Res: adult White-winged Black Tern at the inflow late afternoon/evening, also 3 Spotted Redshanks; 2 Wood Sandpipers still at the inflow, Cattle Egret still, 12 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Ruff, 4 Dunlin & 1 Redshank.

Rutland Water: Sandwich Tern at the end of Hambleton Peninsula.

Monday 11th August

Eyebrook Res: Adult & juv Sandwich Terns back this morning, also 2 Wood Sandpipers at the inflow, juv Cattle Egret still in the inflow stream, Greenshank, Curlew, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Ruff, Common Sandpiper, 4 Dunlin & 2 Ringed Plovers.

Sunday 10th August

Eyebrook Res: juv Little Gull at the island late morning then moved to the inflow; juv Cattle Egret still in the inflow stream; female Red-crested Pochard north of the island; Greenshank, 2 Ruff, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 4 Dunlin & 2 Ringed Plover at the inflow & another Ringed Plover at the island. Adult & juv Sandwich Terns present early morning only before moving to Rutland Water, where they were initially on Goldeneye spit in the South Arm before moving to the North Arm.

Wymeswold: male Redstart this evening just south of the village at SK605226, along the hedge line to the north of the footpath by the bridge.

Friday 8th August

Eyebrook Res: adult & juvenile Sandwich Terns still at the inflow this morning at least, also Cattle Egret, Grey Plover, Ruff & Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Dunlin & Common Sandpiper.

Thursday 7th August

Eyebrook Res: adult & juvenile Sandwich Terns still, on the island this morning, also Black-tailed Godwit & 2 Dunlin at the inflow.

Cossington Meadows: 5 Green Sandpipers, Hobley Lake.

Wednesday 6th August

Eyebrook Res: adult and juvenile Sandwich Terns at the inflow, also 4 Dunlin & 1 Common Sandpiper.

Stanford Res (permit holders only): 3 Black-necked Grebes between Keeper’s Lodge Bay and the reedbed.

Cossington Meadows: 7 Green Sandpipers.

Saturday 2nd August

Cossington Meadows: Wood Sandpiper still this morning, but no sign later. Also Redstart in hawthorns along the main track near the metal gate to Plover Meadow this afternoon.

Friday 1st August

Cossington Meadows: Wood Sandpiper on Upper Marsh, also 2 Green Sandpipers, Hobley Lake.

No sign of the Caspian Tern today – it was in Nottinghamshire, south of Newark this morning, and then flew off high north in the afternoon.
