County Listing

Last updated 25th April 2017

The Leicestershire & Rutland list currently stands at 320 (311 since 1941, when LROS was formed). Latest addition: Bonaparte's Gull. All lists are as submitted by the observers concerned, should only include species on local Categories A & C (see County checklist), and be based on current BOURC taxonomy.

Since most people seem happy to count 'heard only' records (e.g. Golden Oriole, Quail etc) on their county lists, for comparative purposes I have included these (where I know about them) for everyone, whether or not they count them on their own personal lists.

Ring-necked Parakeets - although on Category C nationally, these are not considered to be 'tickable' in a Leicestershire & Rutland context, as the local population is not self-sustaining, and there is no evidence that any birds in the county have come from populations which are, as opposed to being local escapees.

We would like to make this list as complete as possible - anyone not included is welcome to send their total (and updates please) to birdnews@lros.org.uk. There is no 'qualifying level' for inclusion, nor is it in any way a competition, or meant to be at all serious, or indeed important. If you want to have your list included here, please send it in, but if not, no-one's going to force you!

Observers marked with an asterisk have not sent any updates recently; their lists are therefore probably inaccurate. † - observer no longer resident in the county; observers whose names are in italics (John Thatcher and Alan Rayfield) are sadly no longer with us.
