NOVEMBER 2012

Friday 30th

Rutland Water: Hawfinch still in trees in Egleton car park early morning, then disappeared for several hours before returning early afternoon; Long-tailed Duck, Old Hall + Slavonian Grebe in bay to the east off Hambleton Wood; female Red-breasted Merganser, Lagoon 1; drake Smew, Lagoon 3.

Eyebrook Res: drake Ring-necked Duck still, close to plantation shore, also 22 Ruff.

Waxwings:

Loughborough (probably some duplication of flocks in the following): 100+ Brook Lane, mid afternoon; 25 in Empress Road at 14:15; 12 in trees behind the bowls club at the end of Watermead Lane from 12 - 12:15, then flew towards Brook Lane estate/Valley Road.

Stoke Golding: c60 at junction of Whitemoors Road/Roseway.

Leicester: 8 near Sacred Heart Primary School, Spinney Hills.

Caldecott: 6 in Main Street.

Thursday 29th

Rutland Water: Hawfinch, Egleton Reserve car park, showing down to 15 feet! Also Slavonian Grebe & Long-tailed Duck off Old Hall; redhead Smew & female Red-crested Pochard, Lagoon 3; Stonechat, Grebe hide & Corn Bunting, Lax Hill.

Waxwings:

Loughborough: c70 in Rockingham Road, Late afternoon.

Whetstone: 6 in Springwell Lane this morning.

Evington: 6 briefly in back garden of 10 Delaware Road briefly at 10:15, but flew off north and no further sign.

Enderby: 2 at the Police HQ all day.

Wednesday 28th

Eyebrook Res: female Common Scoter, but no sign of Ring-necked Duck.

Enderby: 1 Waxwing at the Police HQ.

Tuesday 27th

Eyebrook Res: drake Ring-necked Duck still.

Rutland Water: redhead Smew still, Lagoon 3.

Waxwings:

Loughborough: c60 in the Great Central Railway engine sheds/Freehold Street/Bentley Close area at 10:25; 40+ in Warwick Way at 09:55 & c30 in Rockingham Road late morning. Also three flocks (probably including some/all of the above) joined together in Rockingham Road at midday, estimated to be 170 - 200 birds.

North Luffenham: 2+ near the railway bridge south-west of the village.

Monday 26th

Rutland Water: 2 female Red-breasted Mergansers & female Common Scoter, South Arm 3; Long-tailed Duck still, North Arm; drake Scaup, Fishponds; Bittern, Lagoon 3.

Waxwings today:

Loughborough: 150+ in Rockingham Road, early afternoon.

Barrow upon Soar: 8 in Fishpool Way this morning.

Evington: 5 at the junction of Barnstaple Road and Crantock Close.

Morcott: 3 (1 opposite the White Horse & 2 south of the village along the B672).

Sunday 25th

Eyebrook Res: drake Ring-necked Duck still at the dam end of the plantation.

Barrow upon Soar: 6 Waxwings outside 110 Sileby Road till 12:30 then flew off (very few berries remaining in the area).

Evington: 8 Waxwings by the leisure centre on Downing Drive briefly early afternoon, then flew off north-east.

Saturday 24th

Eyebrook Res: drake Ring-necked Duck still, also Black-necked Grebe off the plantation & 1st-winter female Scaup.

Swithland Res: female Common Scoter off the dam.

Evington Golf Course: c20 Waxwings in tree between the 5th & 6th fairways at 09:00.

Burbage: 3 Waxwings in Brookside.

Friday 23rd

Eyebrook Res: drake Ring-necked Duck still, but mobile. Great Northern Diver still north of the island this morning, but flew towards the dam around midday and not seen again despite searching, so may have left.

Thursday 22nd

Eyebrook Res: drake Ring-necked Duck & Great Northern Diver between the island and the dam; 2 1st-winter Scaup south of the island.

Rutland Water: 1st-winter drake Scaup, Lyndon; female Red-crested Pochard, Lagoon 3.

Loughborough: 60+ Waxwings, Warwick Way/Durham Road area this morning.

Fosse Park: 21 Waxwings near Marks & Spencer this morning.

Wednesday 21st

Eyebrook Res: drake Ring-necked Duck still off the plantation, also juv Great Northern Diver still.

Groby Pool: female Common Scoter still near the overflow.

Tuesday 20th

Eyebrook Res: juv Great Northern Diver still off the dam, also 6 female Common Scoters.

Groby Pool: female Common Scoter near the overflow.

Monday 19th

Eyebrook Res: juv Great Northern Diver off the dam this morning, but no reports of the Ring-necked Duck today.

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck, North Arm; 6 Waxwings, Robin hide briefly early afternoon then flew west.

Sunday 18th

Eyebrook Res: drake Ring-necked Duck distantly on the east shore, south of Stoke Dry, also juv Great Northern Diver in the same area, + 1 Knot.

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver still between Normanton Church and the dam; Bittern, 3 Scaup, 4 Green Sandpipers & 6 Red-crested Pochards, Lagoon 3.

Priory Water: juv Whooper Swan with Mute Swans this afternoon. View only from the public footpath at this site.

Coalville: 1 Waxwing in Co-op car park this morning.

Burton on the Wolds: 6 Waxwings flew east at 11:00.

Saturday 17th

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver still showing well off Normanton Church; adult Glaucous Gull, South Arm 3 (Fieldfare hide), late afternoon; female Red-breasted Merganser, Lagoon 1; Bittern & 4 Red-crested Pochards, Lagoon 3; Black-necked Grebe, North Arm; 2 Bramblings, Robin hide (Lax Hill); 5 Dunlin, Lagoon 4; Knot, South Arm 1.

Eyebrook Res: adult Glaucous Gull at the inflow at 14:00, also 6 Dunlin.

Lubbesthorpe: Short-eared Owl at the Beggars Lane end of the bridleway this evening.

Loughborough: 21 Waxwings in gardens between Curzon Street and Heathcoat Street this morning, also 26 (possibly same flock) at De Lisle College, Thorpe Hill, early afternoon.

Friday 16th

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver, Normanton Church; Long-tailed Duck, South Arm 3.

Eyebrook Res: adult Glaucous Gull in the roost from 16:20 till dusk.

Coalville: 14 Waxwings in the Co-op car park (end of Bridge Road by the main town centre car park) this afternoon.

Tonge: 5 Waxwings feeding on roadside berries at SK4247 2282 at 07:45.

Thursday 15th

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver off Normanton Church; adult Glaucous Gull, South Arm this evening; female Red-breasted Merganser & 1st-winter Little Gull, Old Hall; Black-necked Grebe, North Arm.

Groby Pool: female Common Scoter till dusk.

Leicester: 17 Waxwings in St Philip's Road at 15:15, then flew off north-east.

Wilds Lodge (just east of Empingham): 7 Waxwings flew south at 15:35 + 10 Bramblings south.

Wednesday 14th

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver still off Normanton Church; Bittern (Buzzard hide), 4 Red-crested Pochards, Ruff, 3 Green Sandpipers & 12 Dunlin, Lagoon 3; female Red-breasted Merganser still, South Arm 3, but no sign of Long-tailed Duck; female Common Scoter, South Arm 1; adult Glaucous Gull (different to yesterday's bird) + 6 Dunlin, Lagoon 4; Black-necked Grebe, North Arm; 1st-winter Little Gull along shoreline at Edith Weston early afternoon, and presumably the same bird in the North Arm.

Coalville: 10 Waxwings near the Co-op at the end of Bridge Road this afternoon, then flew towards Newbridge High School at dusk.

Tuesday 13th

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver off Normanton Church; Glaucous Gull, Lagoon 4 late afternoon; Long-tailed Duck, Red-breasted Merganser & Common Scoter, Old Hall; Black-necked Grebes, North Arm & Lyndon; Waxwing flew over Lagoon 3.

East Midlands Airport: 45 Waxwings flew west this morning.

Monday 12th

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck & female Red-breasted Merganser still, South Arm 3 (Old Hall or Lapwing hide); Jack Snipe, Lagoon 1 (Mallard hide); Black-necked Grebe & 3 Scaup, North Arm/Fishponds; 2 female Scaup, Ruff & 3 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 3; Brambling, Fieldfare hide.

Sunday 11th

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck & female Red-breasted Merganser, South Arm 3; Bittern, 1st-winter Little Gull, 4 Red-crested Pochards & 3 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 3.

North Luffenham Airfield: Merlin & 3 Short-eared Owls, also Waxwing flew west this morning (and possibly same bird seen briefly in North Luffenham later).

Bardon Hill: Waxwing flew west this morning, also 2 Crossbills (1 west and 1 in the pines) & 1 Brambling.

Ashby Parva: 4 Waxwings on Leire Lane briefly at 13:20 then flew west.

Swithland Res: female Common Scoter on north side.

Saturday 10th

Rutland Water: 2 Waxwings, Egleton reserve car park this evening; Bittern, Lagoon 3.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: late Swallow this morning.

Friday 9th

Rutland Water: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull again on Lagoon 4 at dusk; Black-necked Grebe, female Red-breasted Merganser & female Common Scoter, Lyndon; Black-necked Grebe & 3 Scaup, North Arm/Fishponds; 1st-winter Little Gull, 4 Red-crested Pochards, Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff & 2 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 3.

Thursday 8th

Rutland Water: 6 Common Scoters & 13 Dunlin, North Arm; 4 Red-crested Pochards, Ruff & 2 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 3; Stonechat, Snipe hide.

Cottesmore Airfield: one very late Wheatear.

Waxwings today:

15, Nether Broughton briefly before flying off west.

5 flew over Shawell A5 balancing lakes at 10:20.

2 briefly on wires in Southdown Road, Loughborough at 10:15.

Wednesday 7th

Rutland Water: Red-breasted Merganser still, South Arm 3, plus a second bird in North Arm. Also Black-necked Grebe, 3 female Common Scoters, 2 Scaup, 6 Dunlin & 3 Bramblings, North Arm; 3 Whooper Swans, Lagoon 4; 5 Red-crested Pochards, Lagoon 3. Also Short-eared Owl nearby on fencepost along the road to the west of Lagoon 4 this evening.

Mountsorrel: 24 Waxwings near Budgens, late morning at least.

Enderby: 20+ Waxwings, Sloane Square briefly mid-afternoon.

Tuesday 6th

Rutland Water: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull, Lagoon 4 this evening; 9 Waxwings flew west early afternoon; female Red-breasted Merganser, South Arm 3; Black-necked Grebe & 2 Scaup, Fishponds/North Arm; Black-necked Grebe, South Arm 2 near Lyndon Visitor Centre; 5 Red-crested Pochards, Lagoon 3.

Monday 5th

Rutland Water: Little Gull, Ruff & Red-crested Pochard, Lagoon 3.

Hicks Lodge: 1 Short-eared Owl this evening.

Croft: possible Rough-legged Buzzard this afternoon over the Croft end of the amenity bank.

Stanford Res: no sign of Black-throated Diver today.

Sunday 4th

Stanford Res: Black-throated Diver at the inflow - showing very well, either on the main reservoir or the small 'feeder pond' on the opposite side of the road to the fishermen's car park.

Cossington Meadows: Hawfinch flew over Plover Meadow pool towards the main track/Rectory Marsh at 11:50.

Bardon Hill: 42 Bramblings around the mound this morning.

Deans Lane: 2 Whooper Swans north-west & 7 Bramblings south-west this morning.

Watermead CP North: 1 Swallow, Plover hide, this morning.

Saturday 3rd

Rutland Water: adult Azorean Yellow-legged Gull again on Lagoon 4 this afternoon.

Deans Lane: 8 Bramblings west this morning.

Stanford Res: unconfirmed report of Black-throated Diver early afternoon, but no sign when looked for shortly afterwards.

Friday 2nd

Rutland Water: drake Ring-necked Duck, Lyndon reserve, from Tufted Duck hide; Jack Snipe & 1st-winter Little Gull, Lagoon 3; Black-necked Grebe & 2 Scaup, North Arm; Stonechat, Snipe hide.

Thursday 1st

Cottesmore Airfield: 7 Short-eared Owls this afternoon.
