Rutland Water: 2 Jack Snipe still, Shoveler hide, also 3 Smew; Avocet, Lagoon 4; Hawfinch & 4 Bramblings, Egleton Meadows; Slav & Black-necked Grebe, North Arm.

Barrow upon Soar: Siberian Chiffchaff finally confirmed on call. See below (Monday 25th) for directions to the sewage works.

Saturday 30th

Rutland Water: 2 Jack Snipes, Shoveler hide; Grey Plover, North Arm; Great Northern Diver, Whitwell.

Friday 29th

Rutland Water: LRP, North Arm; Slav & Black-necked Grebes now in South Arm 3 from Lapwing hide; male Brambling, Egleton Meadows; 3 (1 drake) Smew, Lagoon 1; redhead Smew, Lagoon 3; 3 Dunlin & 1 Green Sandpiper, Lagoon 4; 8+ Ringed Plovers around the reserve.

Pilton: 19 Crossbills flew south at 09:00.

Braunstone: 40 Waxwings still in Hand Avenue.

Barrow upon Soar: possible/probable Siberian Chiffchaff still at the sewage works.

Thursday 28th

Rutland Water: 2 Cranes flew north-east over Lagoon 3 mid afternoon; 2 Hawfinches behind Dunlin hide, Lagoon 4 this morning; 2 Smew, Lagoon 3.

Albert Village Tip: 1st-winter Glaucous Gull.

Braunstone: 40+ Waxwings still in Hand Avenue.

Wednesday 27th

Rutland Water: 2 Hawfinches & 1 Brambling by the first bend in the path north of Egleton car park; Bittern, Lagoon 3; Slav & Black-necked Grebes North Arm still, off Barnsdale; male Marsh Harrier flew east over the golf course at 07:30.

Braunstone: 44 Waxwings still in Hand Avenue, SK550038.

Bottesford: 30+ Waxwings still in High Street/Barkestone Lane.

Tuesday 26th

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver off Normanton; Red-breasted Merganser at the dam; 2 redhead Smew, lagoon 3.

Priory Water: adult & juv Whooper Swans still.

Braunstone: 30+ Waxwings on Hand Avenue, near Hinckley Road junction at 08:30.

Bottesford: 43 Waxwings still, High Street/Barkestone Lane.

Monday 25th

Barrow upon Soar: Willow Warbler at the sewage works this morning, also possible Siberian Chiffchaff, which usually feeds between filter beds 3 & 4, loosely associating with 3+ collybita Chiffchaffs. Limited parking by the sewage works on Flesh Hovel Lane (off Barrow Road) or park at nearby Pillings Lock Marina. Click here for map. Photos on Dave Gray's blog here.

Rutland Water: Slav Grebe, Whitwell.

Evington: Osprey flew east at 09:50.

Bottesford: still 35+ Waxwings at the junction of High Street and Barkestone Lane this morning.

Sunday 24th

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver at south end of the dam; female Red-breasted Merganser, Lagoon 1; 2 redhead Smew, Lagoon 3.

Bottesford: up to 41 Waxwings still, but mobile. Seem in High Street/ Barkestone Lane and Fleming Avenue/Station Road areas at least.

Friday 22nd

Rutland Water: Slav & Black-necked Grebes still in North Arm off Barnsdale; 1 Smew, Lagoon 3.

Thursday 21st

Rutland Water: 4 Cranes flew north over Lagoon 1 late morning; Slav & Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm.

Wednesday 20th

Rutland Water: Snow Bunting, Lagoon 4 late afternoon. 2+ Bitterns still, Lagoon 3. No sign of Brent Goose today.

Bottesford: 43 Waxwings this afternoon at junction with A52.

Tuesday 19th

Rutland Water: Brent Goose & Wheatear at the dam; Whooper Swan, Long-tailed Duck, Red-breasted Merganser, Slav & Black-necked Grebe all still in North Arm; adult Med Gull, Old Hall; 3 Smew & 2 Scaup, Lagoon 3; Dunlin & 2 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; Green Sandpiper, Egleton Meadows.

Also the first Little Ringed Plover of the year was back at a regular breeding site today. As usual, no information which could potentially identify breeding sites of rare/scarce breeding birds will be given on this site - this includes Schedule 1 species such as Little Ringed Plover and Hobby, and unfortunately now has to include declining species such as Turtle Dove and Nightingale. Individuals considered to be migrants/vagrants (such as last year's Golden Oriole) will be mentioned as usual.

Monday 18th

Rutland Water: Sand Martin, Lagoon 4; Great Northern Diver off Whitwell; adult Whooper Swan, female Red-breasted Merganser, female Long-tailed Duck, Slav & Black-necked Grebe all still in North Arm; 3 Scaup, Lagoon 3; 4 Scaup off Old Hall, but no reports of Black-throated Diver today.

Luffenham Airfield: 2 Short-eared Owls (4 yesterday) + Stonechat.

Melton CP: 1 Waxwing this morning.

Sunday 17th

Rutland Water: Black-throated Diver off Old Hall this evening, also adult Kittiwake; Great Northern Diver between Barnsdale & Whitwell + adult Kittiwake; adult Whooper Swan, female Red-breasted Merganser, female Long-tailed Duck, Slav & Black-necked Grebe all still in North Arm.

Late news: 14 Waxwings in Faire Road, Glenfield on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th, but not seen after 09:00 on the latter date.

Saturday 16th

Shawell A5 Lagoons: 1st-winter Glaucous Gull this afternoon.

Rutland Water: Bittern & Scaup, Lagoon 3; Long-tailed Duck still, North Arm.

Albert Village Lake: adult Kittiwake till 13:00 at least.

Friday 15th

Rutland Water: adult Kittiwake, South Arm 3 mid-afternoon; Great Northern Diver west of Whitwell; Whooper Swan, Long-tailed Duck, Red-breasted Merganser, Slav & Black-necked Grebe, North Arm; 5 Bramblings, Egleton Meadows; 5 Scaup, Lagoon 3.

Thornton Res: drake Garganey still this afternoon.

Eyebrook Res: adult Med Gull at the north end; drake Smew in fishing lodge bay.

Blaby/Glen Parva: no sign of Great White Egret today - apparently it flew towards Leicester yesterday evening.

Thursday 14th

Blaby/Glen Parva: Great White Egret on the new flood relief area, viewable from New Bridge Road, off the A426.

Rutland Water: 2 adult Kittiwakes off the dam mid morning at least; Red-breasted Merganser still, North Arm.

Thornton Res: drake Garganey still in the Markfield arm.

Albert Village Tip: 2nd-winter Glaucous Gull early afternoon.

Wednesday 13th

Thornton Res: drake Garganey still in the Markfield arm, but no sign of the female today.

Rutland Water: 15 Whooper Swans still in North Arm early morning, but 9 flew off east at 08:00, also Red-breasted Merganser, Slav & Black-necked Grebe still + 10 Dunlin & 1 Ringed Plover; 5 Scaup east of Old Hall; 2 Smew (1 drake) & Scaup, Lagoon 3.

Tuesday 12th

Thornton Res: pair of Garganey still present this morning, but not seen after 15:00.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: 1st-winter Iceland Gull again this afternoon, but disturbed by workmen and flew towards the tip at 15:50.

Swithland Res: 11 Whooper Swans still off the dam till 16:10 when they flew off north-east, also female Velvet Scoter still.

Rutland Water: c60 Whooper Swans flew west along the South Arm at 08:25; 18 landed opposite Hambleton Wood, also 16 in the North Arm this morning, 13, Main Water and 23 on Lagoon 1 (all different). Great Northern Diver still at the dam or off the end of Hambleton Peninsula; 2 Bitterns, 12 Smew, 2 Scaup & Black-tailed Godwit, Lagoon 3; Red-breasted Merganser, North Arm, also Slav & Black-necked Grebes in Dickinson's Bay.

Albert Village Lake: 27 Whooper Swans & 3 adult Med Gulls.

Priory Water: the long-staying juvenile Whooper Swan was joined by an adult today.

Stanford Res: male Merlin flew over the car park at 12:30.

Monday 11th

Thornton Res: pair of Garganey this afternoon, but mobile. In the Markfield inflow this evening.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: 1st-winter Iceland Gull again this afternoon.

Swithland Res: 13 Whooper Swans off the dam this afternoon.

Rutland Water: Avocet & Black-tailed Godwit.

Cropston Res: 2 Sand Martins this morning.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: 1st-winter Iceland Gull & 2nd-winter Glaucous Gull.

Cossington Meadows: Black-tailed Godwit, Plover Meadow.

Thurmaston: 4 Waxwings still at Roundhill College this morning.

Brascote Pits: 6 Ringed Plovers.

Thursday 7th

Rutland Water: Mealy Redpoll with 5 Lessers at Whitwell, but no details of exactly where, also Great Northern Diver there; Hawfinch along winter trail behind Lagoon 2; Scaup, Lagoon 3.

Shawell: male Merlin along the footpath north of the A5 lagoons early afternoon.

Albert Village Tip: 2nd-winter Iceland Gull this afternoon.

Swithland Res: female Velvet Scoter still off the dam.

Thurmaston: 4 Waxwings near Roundhill college at 11:35.

Rutland Water: Merlin 250 yards north of Egleton car park, also 5 Bramblings; 2 female Scaup, Lagoon 3.
