Insect News: as many people will be aware, there have been several sightings of Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell (also known as Scarce Tortoiseshell) butterflies in the UK in the last week or so, following an influx into the Netherlands recently, and one was photographed in a private garden in Rutland yesterday - account and photo here. There will surely be more out there, and they could turn up anywhere, so keep your eyes open, and please submit any sightings of this and other species to the Big Butterfly Count. Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell, as its name suggests, has pale yellowish or straw-coloured legs, and is also larger than Small Tortoiseshell, with paler hindwings. Some good photos here.
