Rutland Water: Red-necked Grebe, South Arm 3; 2 Slav & 3 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; 5 Great White Egrets & 14 Smew around the reserve.

Monday 30th

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal now on Lagoon 3, also 25 Red-crested Pochards & Great White Egret there; Red-necked Grebe, South Arm east of Old Hall & 13+ Smew around the reserve (mostly Lagoon 2/3/Lapwing hide area).

Albert Village Tip: juv Glaucous Gull still, also 13 Waxwings by the bridge this afternoon.

Owston: still 15+ Bramblings in the churchyard.

Sunday 29th

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal still, North Arm, in the bay to the right of the point east of the end of the road past Fishponds Cottage. Also Slav Grebe still in North Arm & adult Iceland Gull, Lagoon 4 this evening.

Stanford Res: Long-tailed Duck still.

Albert Village Tip: juv Glaucous Gull.

Groby Pool: no sign of Firecrest today, but 2 Waxwings at Newtown Linford cemetery this morning.

Saturday 28th

Groby Pool: Firecrest again this afternoon, but mobile. See Tuesday's update below for directions. NB the start of the footpath (SK519093) is opposite Newtown Linford cemetery, not Groby as it said previously!

Shawell A5 Lagoons: juv Glaucous Gull again this morning.

Albert Village Tip: juv Iceland Gull & 2 juv Glaucous Gulls this morning.

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal & Whimbrel just east of the anglers' car park in the North Arm, also 2+ Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; 33 Red-crested Pochards, 3 Smew, Bittern & 3 Great White Egrets, Lagoon 3; 2 drake Scaup, 4 Smew & 1 Red-crested Pochards, South Arm 3.

Hinckley: 30+ Waxwings in car park of HJ Hall & Son, at the town end of Coventry Road, down from the car wash.

Friday 27th

Shawell A5 Lagoons: juv Glaucous Gull this afternoon.

Rutland Water: Slav Grebe, 3 Black-necked Grebes & Great White Egret, North Arm.

Wednesday 25th

Groby Pool: Firecrest again behind the pool this morning - directions as yesterday, but the bird was on the right of the path today.

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal still in Dickinson's Bay, North Arm; female Ruddy Duck, 18 Red-crested Pochards & 9 Smew, South Arm 3; redhead Smew & 3 Great White Egrets, Lagoon 3.

Albert Village Tip: juv Iceland Gull & 2 juv Glaucous Gulls.

Tuesday 24th

Groby Pool: Firecrest behind the pool - from Newtown Linford Cemetery, cross the road and follow the footpath that leads to the back of the pool; at the end of the track go over the stile and down the hill to the dell with silver birches on the left.

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal, still North Arm, also Slav Grebe, 3 Black-necked Grebes; 2 Bitterns, Lagoon 3 & 5 Great White Egrets arouind the reserve.

Monday 23rd

Rutland Water: 14 Smew & 30 Red-crested Pochards, South Arm 3; Slav Grebe still, Dickinson's Bay, North Arm; 3 Bitterns, Lagoon 3.

South Wigston: 30 Waxwings in Countesthorpe Road by St Mary's Church this morning.

Sunday 22nd

Rutland Water: Red-necked Grebe, female Scaup & Red-crested Pochard, South Arm 3 (Gadwall/Fieldfare hides); Slav & Black-necked Grebe still, North Arm + 4 Great White Egrets.

Eyebrook Res: pair of Smew off the Plantation, also adult Med Gull & 2 Stonechats at the inflow

Rutland Water: 7 Whooper Swans, Lagoon 4 this morning; Red-necked Grebe & female Scaup, South Arm 3; Slav Grebe & 2 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm.

Rutland Water: Slav & 3 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; Red-necked Grebe, 7 Scaup & female Ruddy Duck, South Arm 3; c20 Red-crested Pochards, Lagoon 3; 5+ Great White Egrets & 9+ Smew around the reserve.

Stanford Res: Long-tailed Duck still.

Albert Village Tip: juv Glaucous Gull still, also redhead Smew on AV Lake.

Leighfield Fishponds: 17 Whooper Swans flew north-west at 09:40.

Thursday 19th

Leicester: c70 Waxwings this afternoon outside Prince Philip House, St Matthews (Malabar Road/Arnold Street, off A47 Humberstone Road).

Wednesday 18th

Albert Village Tip: 3 juv Glaucous Gulls.

Rutland Water: 1st-winter Med Gull, Lagoon 4.

Leicester: c35 Waxwings outside Prince Philip House, St Matthews at 16:00, then flew towards Madras Road. Also 26 Waxwings in Parker Drive (off Blackbird Road) this morning.

Tuesday 17th

Rutland Water: 7 Whooper Swans, North Arm, also 3 Black-necked & 2 Slav Grebes still; Red-necked Grebe, 5 Scaup & 3 Smew, South Arm 3; 9 Smew, Lagoon 2 & 5+ Great White Egrets around the reserve.

Albert Village Tip: 2 juv Glaucous Gulls still.

Leicester: 12+ Waxwings at the junction of Carlton Street & Oxford Street late morning.

Market Harborough: 1 Waxwing in Granville Street.

[Also just outside the county boundary, 11 Waxwings in Stamford on Ryhall Road between the hospital and Homebase/Curry's car park]

Monday 16th

Manton: 2 Waxwings in gardens off Stocks Hill at midday.

Sunday 15th

Albert Village Lake/Tip: 2 juv Glaucous Gulls still this morning, but no sign of the Iceland Gull.

Earl Shilton: 20+ Waxwings, Elmdale Road/Cedar Road this afternoon.

Hinckley: 4 Waxwings in Lossiemouth Road.

Eyebrook Res: drake Smew south of the island.

Saturday 14th

Albert Village Lake/Tip: adult Iceland Gull, adult & 2 juv Glaucous Gulls this morning.

Rutland Water: Red-necked Grebe, drake Scaup & female Ruddy Duck, South Arm 3; 3 Slav Grebes & 3 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; 2 Bitterns, Lagoon 3, also 11 Smew around the reserve, and an unconfirmed report of 7 Great White Egrets, although not sure how accurate that is. They do move around a lot!

Eyebrook Res: 7 Smew.

Leicester: still 4 Waxwings in Newport Street.

Friday 13th

Rutland Water: 2 Slav & 2 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; Ruddy Duck & Scaup, South Arm 3; Bittern, Lagoon 3, also 3+ Great White Egrets, 8+ Smew & 18 Red-crested Pochards around the reserve.

Loughborough: 70 + Waxwings in Park Road, also up to 40 in Thirlmere Drive area.

Leicester: 4 Waxwings in Pool Road/Newport Street behind Tesco Express.

Thursday 12th

Rutland Water: 2 Hawfinches reported by Redshank hide, Lagoon 2, also Green-winged Teal, Whimbrel (in field by the anglers' car park), 2 Slav Grebes & Black-necked Grebe, North Arm, but no reports of Surf Scoter today.

Albert Village Tip: 2 juv Glaucous Gulls.

Loughborough: 52 Waxwings around Thirlmere Drive/Watermead Lane off Nanpantan Road, also 20 still in Epinal Way.

Wednesday 11th

Rutland Water: first-winter Surf Scoter still in the North Arm.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: juv Glaucous Gull this morning.

Burbage: 40+ Waxwings by the playing fields between Rugby Road/Brookside & the railway line.

Loughborough: 20+ Waxwings in Epinal Way.

Hinckley: c25 Waxwings by the entrance to the National Grid offices on Coventry Road.

Tuesday 10th

Rutland Water: first-winter Surf Scoter now in the North Arm, also drake Green-winged Teal, Slav & Black-necked Grebes, Whimbrel & Great White Egrets. Also 96 Pink-footed Geese flew south-east this morning & 17 Smew around the reserve.

Eyebrook Res: 5 Whooper Swans again at the inflow from 13:15 - 14:30 when they flew south. Also 2 Stonechats.

Asfordby: c200 Pink-footed Geese flew high east at10:45.

Leicester: 10 Waxwings still in Blackbird Road, near Blackbird News this morning at least.

Monday 9th

Rutland Water: Slav & Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm, also 4 Great White Egrets. No reports of Surf Scoter or Green-winged Teal today.

Leicester: 12 Waxwings around Dysart Way/Kashmir Road, St Matthews, also 10 (different as seen around the same time) around the junction of Devonshire Road/Blackbird Road.

Melton Mowbray: 3 Waxwings at the train station at 10:09, then flew north when flushed by a Sparrowhawk.

Sunday 8th

Rutland Water: first-winter Surf Scoter still at the dam; Green-winged Teal, Slav Grebe & 2 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm; Red-necked Grebe, Common Scoter & 3 Scaup, South Arm 3; 3+ Great White Egrets around the reserve.

Hinckley: 20+ Waxwings still around the A47 Triumph roundabout, also getting in Cromarty Drive on the housing estate.

Oakham: 12 Waxwings still in Graffham Drive, dropped to 11 after a Sparrowhawk went through!

Countesthorpe: 1 Waxwing in Buckingham Road.

Saturday 7th

Rutland Water: first-winter Surf Scoter still at the dam; Green-winged Teal, Slav Grebe & 3 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; Red-necked Grebe & 3 Scaup, South Arm 3; 8 Red-crested Pochards, Lagoon 3; 5 Great White Egrets & 6+ Smew around the reserve.

Eyebrook Res: adult Glaucous Gull (not a big Iceland as originally thought - see photos opposite) north of the island from c15:05 - 15:25, when it flew off north, also 4 Red-crested Pochards south of the island.

Sence Valley FP: 5 Whooper Swans on Stonebridge Pool.

Oakham: 12 Waxwings in Graffham Drive.

Hinckley: 4 Waxwings stiill by the Triumph factory, but very few/no berries left.

Friday 6th

Rutland Water: first-winter Surf Scoter still at the dam & drake Green-winged Teal, North Arm, but no reports of the Cattle Egret today. Hawfinch briefly on feeders behind the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre, but no further sign.

Eyebrook Res: 2nd-winter Iceland Gull south of the island from 15:30 (presumably the same bird seen on the 4th) also probable female Ring-necked Duck off the plantation shore, distantly from the gate below Holyoaks Farm, but hybrid not ruled out. Also 2 drake Smew, 4 Red-crested Pochards & 2 Stonechats.

Hinckley: now 44 Waxwings by the Triumph factory on the A47.

Thursday 5th

Rutland Water: Cattle Egret around the Egleton reserve this afternoon - on Lagoon 1 till 15:45, then flew off north, possibly to roost at the Fishponds. First-winter Surf Scoter still at the dam; drake Green-winged Teal, Slav Grebe, 3 Black-necked Grebes & 3 Great White Egrets, North Arm; Red-necked Grebe, 4+ Scaup & 4 Smew, South Arm 3.

Twyford: possible Rough-legged Buzzard reported along the minor road to Marefield (and has apparently been around for several days). It was looked for this afternoon, but no sign of either it or any pale Common Buzzards, so remains unconfirmed. Update - I've been reminded that a white-tailed buzzard sp, most likely a Common Buzzard, was seen in this area last October, so whatever it is has probably been there for seeral months at least.

Eyebrook Res: 2nd-winter Iceland Gull south of the island this evening, also female Scaup north of the island & 2 Stonechats.

Church Langton: 10 Waxwings flew north over the school early afternoon.

Hinckley: 24 Waxwings still by the Triumph factory.

Loughborough: 14 Waxwings still in Thirlmere Drive.

Tuesday 3rd

Rutland Water: first-winter Surf Scoter still at the dam; Red-necked Grebe, 2 drake Smew, 4 Scaup & 12 Red-crested Pochards, South Arm 3; Whimbrel, Old Hall; 3 Black-necked Grebes, 2 Great White Egrets & 2 Smew, North Arm/Fishponds.

Hinckley: 25 Waxwings still by the Triumph factory roundabout on the A47 - DO NOT park in the factory entrance road.

Loughborough: 15 Waxwings still around Thirlmere Drive off Nanpantan Road, also 12 in Warwick Way.

Monday 2nd

Rutland Water: first-winter Surf Scoter still at the dam; Red-necked Grebe, Slav Grebe, female Scaup, female Common Scoter & 9 Red-crested Pochards, South Arm 3; Slav Grebe & 3 Black-necked Grebe, North Arm/Fishponds, but no reports of Green-winged Teal today; 4 Red-crested Pochards, Lagoon 3; 2 Stonechats, Lagoon 1; up to 5 Great White Egrets and 10+ Smew around the reserve.

Welby: ringtail Hen Harrier, but no details of exactly where or when.

Oakham: 22+ Waxwings, Graffham Drive/Braunston Road.

Loughborough: 26 Waxwings, Thirlmere Drive/Nanpantan Road & 4 in Sainsbury's car park.

Sence valley FP: 3+ Whooper Swans still.

Swithland Res: Pink-footed Goose still on the north side with Greylags. Nearby, Green Sandpiper on the dam at Cropston Res.

Sunday 1st

Rutland Water: first-winter Surf Scoter still at the dam; drake Green-winged Teal, Slav Grebe & 3 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; Red-necked Grebe, South Arm 3.

Eyebrook Res: juv Glaucous Gull again south of the island from 16:15 - 16:23 when it flew off north, Also Green Sandpiper & 27 Dunlin.

Loughborough: 23 Waxwings in Thirlmere Drive.

Hinckley: 1 Waxwing in trees by the A47/Roston Drive roundabout opposite the Triumph factory.

Kibworth Beauchamp: 1 Waxwing in High Street at midday.
