Leicester: 12 Waxwings flew south over Gilroes cemetery at 12:30.

Anstey: 10 Waxwings in hedge opposite the Co-op.

Shepshed: 20 Waxwings in Griffin Close at 12:30.

Sunday 30th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still at the Lyndon reserve.

Saturday 29th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still from Shallow Water hide (Lyndon).

Albert Village Lake: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull still.

Eyebrook Res: 2 drake Smew off the dam.

Melton Mowbray: 20+ Waxwings this morning.

Birstall: 12 Waxwings in Sycamore Road this morning, also 6 at junction of Fielding Road/Oakfield Avenue at 10:30.

Friday 28th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon from Shallow Water hide (Lyndon), also 6 Scaup; Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Slav Grebes & 12+ Smew, South Arm.

Albert Village Tip: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull still this afternoon.

Lutterworth: 7 Waxwings at the junction of Brookfield Way/Juniper Close this afternoon.

Thursday 27th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon from Tufted Duck hide (Lyndon reserve); adult Glaucous Gull roosted in South Arm around the island - seen from Old Hall at 16:20.

Thurmaston: Short-eared Owl in field by A46 opposite the Hobby Horse pub this afternoon.

Albert Village Lake: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull still.

Swithland Res: female Scaup reported at the dam.

Wednesday 26th

Albert Village Lake: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull still, also a 1st-winter Glaucous x Herring Gull hybrid.

Tuesday 25th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still, Lyndon reserve; adult Glaucous Gull roosted in South Arm 1; 3 Slav Grebes, South Arm 3, also 11 Smew & 12 Scaup around the reservoir.

Monday 24th

Swithland Res: male Smew + 7 Red-crested Pochards off the dam.

Leicester: 31 Waxwings in Atlee Way opposite Southfields Library this morning.

Loughborough: 10 Waxwings at junction of Nanpantan Road and Thirlmere Drive this afternoon, also 200 Pink-footed Geese flew north-west at 09:40.

Sunday 23rd

Rutland Water: adult Glaucous Gull & 2nd-winter Iceland Gull roosted in South Arm off Old Hall this evening; drake American Wigeon & Red-necked Grebe, Deep Water hide (Lyndon reserve); 3 Slav Grebes, South Arm 3; 4 Mealy Redpolls behind Plover hide, also 1 behind Shallow Water hide; 9+ Smew & 16 Scaup around the reservoir.

Eyebrook Res: 7 Smew (2 drakes) north of the island.

Ashby de la Zouch: 5 Waxwings in Featherbed Lane.

Saturday 22nd

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon, Red-necked Grebe, Long-tailed Duck, Smew & Scaup still, Lyndon reserve.

Watermead CP North: 1 Bittern back in front of Crake hide this afternoon.

Albert Village Lake: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull still this morning.

Eyebrook Res: 8 Smew (2 drakes).

Leicester: 20+ Waxwings by the pork pie roundabout at 15:30.

Sutton Cheney: 2 Waxwings still at Sutton Wharf, showing very well by the cafe.

Friday 21st

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon, Red-necked Grebe, 3 Smew, 9 Scaup & 11 Red-crested Pochards, Lyndon reserve.

Albert Village tip: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull still.

Shawell: adult Med Gull on the A5 pools.

Eyebrook Res: 8 Smew.

Thursday 20th

Rutland Water: adult Glaucous Gull in the South Arm 3 roost this evening; drake American Wigeon, Red-necked Grebe & 11 Scaup, Lyndon reserve; Long-tailed Duck, North Arm; 2+ Mealy Redpolls behind Redshank hide.

Albert Village Lake: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull at 14:00 before flying towards the tip at 14:15.

Wednesday 19th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still from Deep Water hide, also Red-necked Grebe, 4 Smew, 10 Scaup & 19 Red-crested Pochards; Long-tailed Duck, 3 Slav Grebes, 3 Smew, Scaup & 2 Red-crested Pochards, North Arm.

Albert Village: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull again on the tip this afternoon.

Swithland Res: White-fronted Goose still with Greylag flock on the south side, but mobile.

Leicester: 17 Waxwings flew west over Halifax Drive at 08:05, also 9 by Glenfield Hospital on Groby Road, opposite Holmwood Drive at 12:25 and 15 by the pond in Victoria Park at 13:00.

Tuesday 18th

Albert Village: 3rd-winter Glaucous Gull on the tip this afternoon.

Swithland Res: White-fronted Goose, 3 Smew & 3 Red-crested Pochards.

Leicester: 17 Waxwings on Hinckley Road/Minehead Street + 22 on Westcotes Drive this morning.

Monday 17th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still from Deep Water hide, also Red-necked Grebe, 3 Smew & 4 Scaup; 3 Slav Grebes + 7 Smew, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal still by the island.

Swithland Res: 3 Smew still + White-fronted Goose.

Sunday 16th

Rutland Water; drake American Wigeon still from Deep Water hide, also Red-necked Grebe, 3 Smew, 7 Scaup & 50+ Red-crested Pochards; 3 Slav Grebes, North Arm.

Swithland Res: White-fronted Goose, south side + 3 Red-crested Pochards & 3 Smew.

Knighton: 110 Waxwings at junction of Welford Road & Palmerston Way at midday.

Sutton Cheney: 2 Waxwings at Sutton Wharf by the cafe.

Saturday 15th

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal still at the island.

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon, Deep Water hide (Lyndon reserve), also Red-necked Grebe, drake Smew & 5 Scaup.

Evington: 7 Waxwings in The Common opposite the park entrance.

Friday 14th

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal still north of the island.

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon, Deep Water hide (Lyndon reserve), also 4 Scaup & 14+ Red-crested Pochards; Bittern, Lagoon 3; Long-tailed Duck + 3 Slav Grebes still North Arm.

Waxwings:

Groby: 108 in Glebe Road this morning.

Knighton: 100+ Welford Road/Asquith Way at 10:50.

Hinckley: 70+ in Coventry Road around Trinity Motors, but mobile.

Leicester: 15 in Queens Road this afternoon, then flew towards Victoria Park.

Evington: 6 again in The Common, opposite the entrance to Evington Park.

Oakham: 3 in Tyne Road opposite Avon Close at 09:30.

Thursday 13th

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal still north of the island.

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck + 3 Slav Grebes still North Arm; Red-necked Grebe, Whitwell Creek; 7 Scaup, South Arm.

Waxwings:

Hinckley: 19 in Coventry Road by the Total garage for 30 minutes from 12:15, then flew towards the town centre.

Aylestone Meadows: 2 by Packhorse Bridge from 10:45 - 11:00, then flew towards Asda. Nearby, 17 by the canal bridge on Soar Valley Way at 11:15.

Evington: 5 in The Common, opposite the park entrance at 10:30.

Lutterworth: 1 in hedge by the western bypass at 13:20.

Wednesday 12th

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal at the island today.

Hathern: report of Bittern by the River Soar this morning.

Glenfield: 10 Waxwings in Dominion Road near junction with Unity Road.

Tuesday 11th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon back at Lyndon, also Red-necked Grebe, 4 Scaup & 58 Red-crested Pochards; Long-tailed Duck & 3 Slav Grebes, North Arm.

Albert Village Tip: 2nd-winter Iceland Gull early afternoon.

Leicester: up to 174 Waxwings in Hinckley Road area, also 18 in Newport Street at 11:45.

Lubbesthorpe: 32 Waxwings at corner of Meridian South & Meridian West, Meridian Industrial Estate. Also present on Saturday and Sunday.

Broughton Astley: 20 Waxwings in Murray Close.

Monday 10th

Great Easton: male Hen Harrier at the western end of the usual Short-eared Owl area this afternoon, still present at 13:20 at least. Leaving Great Easton on the minor road towards Caldecott, turn right by the recycling bins and park at the end of the track. Walk west along the old railway line to view the area. Please keep strictly to the paths at this site. (No Short-eared Owls reported recently).

Watermead CP North: 2 Bitterns still showing well from Crake hide. Please approach quietly and keep quiet in the hide.

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal still at the inflow, also 8 Smew & Red-crested Pochard, but no sign of yesterday's Great White Egret.

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck, 3 Slav Grebes & 15 Smew (8 drakes), North Arm; Red-necked Grebe, Goldeneye hide.

Swithland Res: drake & redhead Smew still on the south side.

Leicester: 192 Waxwings by the shops at the junction of Hinckley Road/Bolton Road at midday.

Peckleton: 4 Waxwings.

Sunday 9th

Eyebrook Res: Great White Egret on ice opposite the island from 16:10 until 16:30 when it flew towards the east end of the reservoir. Also drake Green-winged Teal at the island, 7 Smew + Red-crested Pochard.

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck & 3 Slav Grebes off Barnsdale; female Scaup at south end of dam, but no sign of American Wigeon at Whitwell or the dam.

Watermead CP North: at least one Bittern still from Crake hide this morning.

Leicester: 60+ Waxwings in Wyngate Drive this morning.

Hinckley: 25 Waxwings by the canal at Trinity Marina at midday.

Broughton Astley: 5 Waxwings in the White Horse car park this afternoon, also 1 in Murray Close this afternoon.

Saturday 8th

Watermead CP North: 3 Bitterns still from Crake hide.

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck off Barnsdale, also 3 Slav Grebes.

Leicester: c170 Waxwings in Hinckley Road/Wyngate Drive/Dorchester Road area this morning.

Broughton Astley: 25 Waxwings in Murray Close & Crowfoot Way.

Friday 7th

Watermead CP North: 2 Bitterns still from Crake hide this afternoon.

Waxwings:

Market Harborough: 5 on industrial estate opposite Ashley Way at 14:00.

Loughborough: 1 in Jetcott Avenue/Park Road this morning.

Thursday 6th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still in Whitwell Creek; Long-tailed Duck, 2 Slav Grebes & Smew off Barnsdale; 2 redhead Smew from the fishermen's car park on Hambleton Road.

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal still at the inflow, also 7 Smew (2 drakes) south of the island & 1 Red-crested Pochard.

Watermead CP North: up to 3 Bitterns still from Crake hide. Please approach the hide quietly.

Swithland Wood: male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker by the stream in the south-west corner at 11:20.

Waxwings:

Leicester: up to 150 in Hinckley Road/Dunster Street/Westcotes Drive area.

Groby: 5 in Glebe Road.

Wednesday 5th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon in Whitwell Creek, also drake Smew at the dam.

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal still at the inflow, on the west bank, also 6 redhead Smew.

Watermead CP North: 3 Bitterns roosted in front of Crake hide again this evening (+ at least one during the day). Birds are showing very well, but please approach the hide quietly to avoid disturbing them.

Leicester: 80+ Waxwings opposite the shops in Hinckley Road/Dunster Street at 11:15.

Melton Mowbray: 8 Waxwings in the car park opposite the Police station in King Street at 15:45.

Tuesday 4th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon in Whitwell Creek, also 3 Slavonian Grebes off Whitwell.

Watermead CP North: 2 Bitterns again from Crake hide this morning. Please approach the hide QUIETLY as the birds are often close and easily disturbed. Also note that the hide is only open from 08:30 - 16:00.

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal still.

Waxwings:

Leicester: 150+ in Hinckley Road/King Richards Road area, but mobile; 25 in Victoria Park at 09:15.

Loughborough: 30 at junction of Thirlmere Drive/Nanpantan Road all day, also 14 in Meadow Lane, opposite Hanford Way at 14:10.

Monday 3rd

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon with Wigeon flock on grass just west of Sykes Lane car park; 3 Slavonian Grebes off the end of Hambleton Peninsula; Long-tailed Duck, Main Water, but mobile.

Edmondthorpe: Great Grey Shrike c1/2 mile west of the village on Cord Hill Lane - approaching from the village park sensibly just before the sharp left hand bend (SK850177) and search the hedges and fields either side of the road. The bird ranges widely around the whole area, but was spending most of its time to the south this afternoon.

Watermead CP North: 2 Bitterns showing well from Crake hide this morning.

Cossington Meadows: still 3+ Bearded Tits in the Moor Pool reedbed (also getting in the small reedbed at the opposite corner of Tern Pool), and 1 Bittern.

Waxwings:

Leicester: 130 in Hinckley Road at 10:20 (50+ flew towards Fosse Road South at 13:30). Also 30+ flew over Knighton Road/London Road junction.

Loughborough: 30 in Fairmeadows Way at 12:30.

Countesthorpe: 10 at The Chestnuts/Willow Drive, but mobile

Ibstock: 9 at 57 High Street this afternoon.

Mountsorrel: 7 in Linkfield Road this morning.

Sunday 2nd

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal just north of the island.

Rutland Water: no sign of American Wigeon at the dam this morning; 30 White-fronted Geese at the end of Hambleton Road; Long-tailed Duck, drake Smew & 5 Scaup off Normanton.

Watermead CP North: 3 Bitterns together in the reedbed near Crake hide this evening.

Cossington Meadows: Bittern & 5 Bearded Tits at Moor Pool reedbed this afternoon. Nearby, redhead Smew at Cossington South Lakes.

Swithland Res: male & female Smew still on the south side.

Waxwings:

Hinckley: 60+ still in Brick Kiln Street, off Coventry Road.

Leicester: 50+ in Barclay Street (off Fosse Road South) at 13:50, also 50+ in Gimson Road (off King Richards Road) at 13:50.

Saturday 1st

Firstly, a few changes to the species which will be reported on the news page. In addition to those previously mentioned on the Guidelines page (the list has now been updated), the following species will be 'dropped' as from now:

Little Egret

Woodcock (exceptions may be made for birds showing well such as the ones recently at Watermead North)

Yellow-legged & Caspian Gulls

Brambling

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon on grass at the southern end of the dam this afternoon; Red-necked Grebe, North Arm, just off the end of the Barnsdale road.

Burrough Hill: Hawfinch by the feeding station next to the toilet block in the car park at 12:50.

Cossington Meadows: 5 Bearded Tits still in the Moor Pool reedbed; nearby, redhead Smew & female Scaup on the river behind Wanlip Sewage Works + Green Sandpiper.

Swithland Res: male and redhead Smew on small patch of open water close to the road bridge and showing very well.

Waxwings:

Leicester: 150 in Kirby Road, off King Richards Road at 08:45.

Hinckley: c70 half way along Brookside at 13:30, c50 in Brick Kiln Street at 08:45.

Loughborough: 43 in Meadow Lane by the Boat Inn this afternoon.

Desford: 3 by the school in Kirby Road at 09:30.
