Friday 28th

Rutland Water: Black-throated & Great Northern Divers off the dam; 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 5 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: Bittern showed briefly morning & afternoon on both sides of the bridge, but generally elusive, also 25+Dunlin at the inflow.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still off the dam.

Thursday 27th

Eyebrook Res: Bittern still at the inflow.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still off the dam.

Wednesday 26th

Eyebrook Res: Bittern showed very well this morning, both sides of the stream. The bird spends most of its time walking around under the trees well away from the water, only occasionally feeding along the inflow stream. Also adult Med Gull this evening & 38 Dunlin.

Albert Village Lake: adult Med Gull at midday.

Tuesday 25th

Rutland Water: Black-throated & Great Northern Divers still off the dam, also female Black Redstart at the southern end; 2 Black-necked Grebes & 2 Long-tailed Ducks still, North Arm; Green Sandpiper, Lagoon 3.

Eyebrook Res: Bittern again this afternoon, generally elusive but seen on both sides of the inflow stream, also adult Med Gull early morning.

Monday 24th

Andrew Harrop has pointed out that the gull photographed at Rutland Water on Saturday appears to show dark tips to several of the outer primaries. Further photos show that it does indeed have dark tips and outer webs to several outer primaries (most obvious on the upperwings), and the bird is now considered not to be a pure Glaucous Gull.

Eyebrook Res: Bittern again this afternoon, showing well along the hedge behind the small plantation east of the bridge. Also 12+ Dunlin at the inflow.

South Wigston: Green Sandpiper in channel between Landsdowne Grove and the canal; male Stonechat in field on Wigston side of canal near the two locks & female Stonechat behind the sewage works.

Sunday 23rd

Rutland Water: 2 Long-tailed Ducks still, North Arm; drake Smew, Lyndon.

Saturday 22nd

Rutland Water: Black Redstart still at the dam; Siberian Chiffchaff, Whitwell; presumed Glaucous x Herring Gull hybrid, Lagoon 4; 4 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm.

Stanford Res: female Red-breasted Merganser at the dam.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still on the north side.

Friday 21st

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver, Black-throated Diver (distant) & Black Redstart, all still at the dam; Long-tailed Duck & 4 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; Bittern, Lagoon 3; adult Med Gull, Lagoon 4; Siberian Chiffchaff still, Whitwell.

Eyebrook Res: Bittern seen several times this afternoon north of the bridge, but elusive.

Thursday 20th

Eyebrook Res: Bittern again around the road junction west of the bridge at the inflow at 16:00.

Outwoods: 12 Crossbills at the east end this afternoon.

Wednesday 19th

Rutland Water: Black-throated Diver still off Whitwell, also a Brambling there.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still on the north side.

Tuesday 18th

Rutland Water: Black-throated & Great Northern Divers, Whitwell, also Siberian Chiffchaff still; 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 4 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm; Bar-tailed Godwit, Lagoon 1; Black Redstart still at southern end of dam; drake Smew, Lagoon 3; 3 Ringed Plovers & 2 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 4.

Monday 17th

Rutland Water: Siberian Chiffchaff still at Whitwell.

Sunday 16th

Rutland Water: adult Kittiwake off the dam mid afernoon, then flew towards Normanton, also Black Redstart still + Black-throated & Great Northern Divers; 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 4 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm; Short-eared Owl by the sailing club late afternoon.

Grimston: 1st-winter Kittiwake in a garden around midday, but later flew off.

Lockington GP: Merlin this morning.

Stanford Res: female Red-breasted Merganser still at the inflow, also Green Sandpiper on the settling pond.

Barrow-upon-Soar: Siberian Chiffchaff still at the sewage works, with 5 nominate race Chiffchaffs.

Beacon Hill: male Brambling in Beeches below the top car park.

Pickwell: Green Sandpiper still in field along Stygate Lane.

Saturday 15th

Luffenham Airfield: male Merlin this morning.

Stanford Res: female Red-breasted Merganser still at the inflow.

Rutland Water: redhead Smew, Lagoon 4.

Swithland Res: 4 Scaup still on the north side.

Friday 14th

Rutland Water: Black-throated & Great Northern Divers still off the dam.

Swithland Res: 4 Scaup still on the north side.

Thursday 13th

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver still off the dam + Black Redstart at the southern end. 2 Long-tailed Ducks & 2 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm.

Tuesday 11th

Rutland Water: Black-throated & Great Northern Divers still off the dam, also Black Redstart still at the southern end; 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 4 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; 2 drake Smew, Lagoon 2; 2 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4.

Monday 10th

Stanford Res: 'very poorly looking' adult Kittiwake at the eastern end, also female Red-breasted Merganser still.

Rutland Water: Siberian Chiffchaff still in bushes behind the dam, also Black-throated & Great Northern Divers off the dam and Black Redstart at south end; 5 Whooper Swans, 3 Long-tailed Duck & 4 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; Black Redstart still at the south end of the dam; 7 Smew (5 drakes) & 2 Stonechats, Lagoon 2.

Eyebrook Res: 9 Whooper Swans at the south end this afternoon.

Sunday 9th

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck & Black-necked Grebe, North Arm; Black Redstart still at the south end of the dam; female Scaup off Normanton Church.

Saturday 8th

Stanford Res: female Red-breasted Merganser between the dam and the raft (permit only).

Friday 7th

Rutland Water: Black-throated & Great Northern Divers off the dam + Black Redstart still at southern end of dam; 3Long-tailed Ducks & 4 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; 6 Smew, Lagoon 2.

Eyebrook Res: 7 Dunlin at the inflow.

Thursday 6th

No news received for today. Probably not surprising really, given the weather!

Wednesday 5th

Swithland Res: 5 Scaup still off the dam.

Tuesday 4th

Rutland Water: Black-throated & Great Northern Divers both off Whitwell; Black Redstart still at southern end of dam; 15 Whooper Swans flew south-west this morning; 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 2 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; female Scaup off Normanton Church; Bar-tailed Godwit & female Stonechat, Lagoon 1; 6 Smew, Lagoons 2/3; 17 Bramblings left the Burley Fishponds roost.

Eyebrook Res: Bittern flushed near the bridge at 15:00; flew along the road towards the junction and out of sight. No further sign despite searching.

Longmoor Lake: 16 adult Whooper Swans.

Monday 3rd

Rutland Water: Bar-tailed Godwit still, Wet Meadow; 5 Smew, Lagoons 2/3; 21 Dunlin, Lagoon 1; Black Redstart still at south end of the dam.

Wanlip North Lakes: Pink-footed Goose in fields between the lakes and the River Wreake.

Sunday 2nd

Rutland Water: 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 4 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm; both divers still around but mobile; Black Redstart still at the southern end of the dam, but no sign of the Siberian Chiffchaff; Bar-tailed Godwit, 3 Dunlin & Stonechat, Lagoon 1.

Swithland Res: 5 Scaup still on the north side.

Pickwell: Green Sandpiper in field with wind turbine near Melton Meats factory, c1 mile north-east of the village along Stygate Lane.
