DECEMBER

Tuesday 31st

Swithland Res: juvenile Black-throated Diver still off the dam.

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver at the dam; 2 Long-tailed Ducks & 3 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm, also nearby, 20+ Bramblings along Barnsdale Avenue.

Monday 30th

Swithland Res: juvenile Black-throated Diver still off the dam.

South Wigston Sewage Works: probable Siberian Chiffchaff along the public footpath at the back of the works this afternoon.

Sunday 29th

Swithland Res: juvenile Black-throated Diver still off the dam + 6 Scaup still.

Eyebrook Res: female Ring-necked Duck still, close in just north of the fishing lodge. Immature male Marsh Harrier at the north-east end at 13:00, 4 Smew (3 drakes) around the reservoir, and the Scaup x Tufted Duck hybrid in the south-east corner. No sign of the Velvet Scoter - presumed gone. Also a quick reminder about the 2 Ruddy Shelducks that have been present here for several months - in common with every other British record for the last 100+ years, these are considered to be escaped or feral birds, and as such are not usually mentioned on the news page.

Rutland Water: Bittern & 6 Smew (2 drakes), Lagoon 3.

Barrow-upon-Soar: Siberian Chiffchaff still at the sewage works, with 6 nominate race birds.

Saturday 28th

Swithland Res: Black-throated Diver still off the dam.

Eyebrook Res: female Ring-necked Duck off the fishing lodge, also drake Smew and possible drake Scaup (NB there has been a Scaup x Tufted hybrid here recently) but no reports of the Velvet Scoter since Thursday.

Rutland Water: 2 Long-tailed Ducks & 2 Black-necked Grebe still, North Arm; Great Northern Diver still at the dam.

Friday 27th

Swithland Res: Black-throated Diver still showing well from the dam, also 6 Scaup still.

Eyebrook Res: female Ring-necked Duck still from the hide, also 5 Smew & 2 Red-crested Pochards.

Thursday 26th

Swithland Res: Black-throated Diver still from the dam (photos to follow tomorrow) + 5 Scaup.

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam, female Ring-necked Duck still from the hide + 5 Smew (4 drakes).

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver still at the dam (no reports of Black-throat today).

Wednesday 25th

Swithland Res: Black-throated Diver still from the dam + 6 Scaup.

Rutland Water: Black-throated Diver & Great Northern Diver at the dam.

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam, female Ring-necked Duck still from the hide + 4 Smew (2 drakes).

Coalville: 2 Waxwings in St David's Crescent.

Tuesday 24th

Swithland Res: Black-throated Diver from the dam, also 6 Scaup still.

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam, and female Ring-necked Duck still from the hide.

Stanford Res: 1st-winter Shag till 10:50, then flew west.

Rutland Water: 2 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm.

Monday 23rd

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam, and female Ring-necked Duck still from the hide.

Sunday 22nd

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam, also female Ring-necked Duck (last reported on 10th November!) again in the bay south-west of the island + 3 Smew (2 drakes).

Rutland Water: 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 1+ Black-necked Grebe still, North Arm.

Barrow-upon-Soar: Siberian Chiffchaff still at the sewage works this morning.

Saturday 21st

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam.

Rutland Water: Bittern & 4 Smew (1 drake), Lagoon 3.

Stanford Res: Bittern flew from reedbed on the Liecs side this morning.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still on the north side.

Friday 20th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam.

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver, South Arm, then headed towards the dam; 1+ Long-tailed Duck & 4 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; 22 Dunlin, Manton Bay.

Thursday 19th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam.

Albert Village Lake: adult Glaucous Gull still this monring, then flew towards the tip at 09:50.

Rutland Water: Bittern + 3 Smew (1 drake), Lagoon 3.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still on the north side.

Wednesday 18th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam.

Tuesday 17th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam.

Rutland Water: Black Redstart again at the dam, also Great Northern Diver; 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 4 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm.

Between Shepshed & Hathern: 'small flock' of Waxwings near a thatched cottage at 11:00.

Countesthorpe: 3 or 4 Waxwings in Hallcroft Avenue this afternoon.

Monday 16th

Albert Village Lake: adult Glaucous Gull again this morning.

Croft: possible Spoonbill flew south this morning, heading towards Mill on the Soar.

Sunday 15th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam this morning.

Rutland Water: 2 Long-tailed Ducks & 3 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm; Great Northern Diver, Whitwell/dam + 3 Scaup at the dam.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still on the north side.

Hungarton/Baggrave: no sign again of the Great Grey Shrike in a 90 minute search this morning.

Saturday 14th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off the dam, but at the far end today and less confiding than it has been.

Rutland Water: 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 3 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm; Common Scoter on Lagoon 4 briefly then flew off; drake & 3 redhead Smew, Lagoon 3.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: 2nd-winter Glaucous Gull briefly late afternoon.

Barrow upon Soar: Siberian Chiffchaff still at the sewage works.

Groby: 30 Waxwings over the Sacheveral Way roundabout at 13:55.

Friday 13th

No sign of the Great Grey Shrike near Hungarton today.

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still showing very well near the fishing lodge, also drake & female Red-crested Pochard nearby, 2 drake & 2 redhead Smew off Stoke Dry + 6 Dunlin at the inflow.

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver & Common Scoter at the dam; Long-tailed Duck & 3 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm.

Thursday 12th

Hungarton: Great Grey Shrike c1/2 mile ENE of the village along Hungarton Road, c. SK702077 at 13.00. "Seemed to be working its way southwards."

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off dam.

Albert Village Tip: adult Glaucous Gull still.

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver still (Whitwell?), but no sign of Black Redstart at the dam today.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still on the north side.

Wednesday 11th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off dam.

Rutland Water: Black Redstart at the south end of the dam; Great Northern Diver, Whitwell Creek; 4 Smew, Lagoons 2 & 3.

Tuesday 10th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter still off dam. Also drake & redhead Smew off Stoke Dry car park & 15+ Dunlin at the inflow.

Watermead CP North: female Merlin from Plover hide at 09:00.

Rutland Water: 2 Long-tailed Ducks & 3 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm; Common Scoter, dam; Merlin over Lagoon 1 at dusk; Bittern & 4 Smew, Lagoon 3.

Monday 9th

Eyebrook Res: drake Velvet Scoter showing very well close in to the dam this afternoon. Also 2 Smew & 20+ Dunlin at the inflow.

Swithland Res: 6 Scaup still on the north side.

Sunday 8th

Rutland Water: 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 3 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: drake Smew off Stoke Dry car park.

Outwoods: 2 Crossbills.

Saturday 7th

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal still west of the sailing club; Great Northern Diver, North Arm, also now 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 3 Black-necked Grebes; 2 Bitterns & 3 Smew, Lagoon 3; drake Scaup & Common Scoter at the dam.

Albert Village Lake/Tip: adult Glaucous Gull still.

Swithland Res: 2 Scaup on the north side.

Friday 6th

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck & 3 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: 2 drake & 1 redhead Smew + 30 Dunlin.

Thursday 5th

Swithland Res: 4 Scaup still on the north side.

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal still west of the Sailing Club; 2 Long-tailed Ducks & 3 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm; female/imm Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Scaup & Common Scoter at the dam; Bittern & 3 Smew (1 drake), Lagoon 3.

Tuesday 3rd

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal still west of the Sailing Club; 2 Long-tailed Ducks & 3 Black-necked Grebes still, North Arm; female/imm Red-breasted Merganser & 2 Scaup at the dam.

Eyebrook Res: 2 drake & 2 redhead Smew off Stoke Dry; 13 Dunlin at the inflow.

Monday 2nd

Albert Village Lake: adult Glaucous Gull again this morning.

Rutland Water: drake Green-winged Teal still west of the Sailing Club.

Sunday 1st

Barrow upon Soar: Siberian Chiffchaff at the sewage wroks again this afternoon with 2 nominate Chiffchaffs.

Eyebrook Res: 2 drake & 1 redhead Smew, 3 Red-crested Pochards, 19 Dunlin & 1 Green Sandpiper.

Beacon Hill: 30 Bramblings around the top car park.

Swithland Res: 4Scaup on the north side.
