Friday 31st

Eyebrook Res: Brent Goose this afternoon.

Watermead CP North: Bittern flew over A46 towards Wanlip North Lakes at 11:30, then in small pool between Kingfisher hide and the entrance at 12:30 before flying towards Crake hide.

Cossington Meadows: still 5 Bearded Tits in the Moor Pool reedbed, also Woodcock, Rectory Marsh.

Waxwings:

Hinckley: 200+ at the junction of Granville Road/Coventry Road at 08:30.

Birstall: 64 in Queensgate Drive on the green at 08:30, also 50+ in Wanlip Lane at 10:45 (not Wanlip Lane, Syston as reported earlier) & 8 in Sibson Road opposite Bargain Booze.

Leicester: 80 in Saffron Lane at 09:00; flew off east.

Desford: 7 in Kirby Road park, near the school.

Thursday 30th

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal at the inflow.

Watermead CP North: Bittern showing well from Crake hide this morning, also 2+ Mealy Redpolls by Kingfisher hide.

Albert Village Lake: 1 Caspian Gull & 3+ Yellow-legged Gulls.

Waxwings:

Leicester: 210 by the pork pie roundabout (A563/Saffron Lane) early morning - this then split into several smaller flocks, including 150 in the Landsdowne Road/Knighton Lane/Grace Road area. 40+ in the Hinckley Road/Westcotes Drive area were presumably different birds.

Loughborough: up to 200, covering a wide area, but centred on the Shelthorpe roundabout on Epinal Way.

Hinckley: 168 at the junction of Coventry Road/Brick Kiln Street.

Wednesday 29th

Waxwings:

Leicester: 200+ by the pork pie roundabout (junction of A563 and Saffron Lane) at 14:30, also 40+ in the Landsdowne Road/Knighton Lane/Grace Road area, 12:00 - 13:15 at least.

Hinckley: 200+ in Coventry Road at 13:00, opposite the national grid buildings and the Prince of Wales pub. Also 12 at the Burbage Road end of Brookside this morning.

Loughborough: 21 in Jetcott Avenue/Park Road at 12:30, also 4 in Middle Avenue (off Derby Road) at 11:00.

Great Easton: 15+ in High Street opposite the Post Office at 13:17.

Evington: 9 in Wakerley Road at 10:00.

Tuesday 28th

Cossington Meadows: Bittern at Moor Pool 11:40, then flew north, also in ditch between Upper Marsh & Tern Pool at 12:10, then flew to far side of the river. Woodcock, Rectory Marsh - flew towards Swan Meadow.

Rutland Water: 4 drake Smew + 7 Red-crested Pochards between Normanton & the dam.

Eyebrook Res: 5 redhead Smew just north of the island.

Watermead CP North: male Brambling on feeders by the toilet block.

Whitwick: 2 Little Egrets on the Thringstone Brook.

Waxwings:

Loughborough: 200 in Ashby Road opposite The Generous Briton pub, also 70 in Jetcott Avenue at 12:20 when they flew south (+ Brambling there) and 100+ at Regent Street retail park at 14:30.

Birstall: 52 in Wanlip Road near the bus stop by Windmill Avenue.

Market Harborough: 30+ in the industrial estate opposite the junction of Rockingham Road & Ashley Way at 12:00.

Monday 27th

Late news for yesterday: Great White Egret flew north into Leicestershire over Witherley Church late afternoon - may be in the Sheepy Magna/Parva area where one has been in previous years.

Waxwings:

Oadby: 70 in Sainsbury's car park off Glen Road (A6) this morning.

Loughborough: 54 in Sainsbury's car park at 15:30.

Leicester: 40 by the 'pork pie roundabout' (junction of A563 and Saffron Lane) in trees opposite Southfields Library, then flew north at 09:35.

Sunday 26th

Cossington Meadows: Bittern flushed from River Soar adjacent to Barber's Rough at 11:30 - flew towards Tern Pool; later on the river by Plover Meadow at 14:30 before flying towards the pool in Plover Meadow. Also 3+ Bearded Tits still at Moor Pool.

Rutland Water: Smew & 24 White-fronted Geese, Normanton; 2 Smew, Old Hall.

Watermead CP North: 2 Woodcocks showing well from Kingfisher hide.

Frolesworth Manor Lake: adult Yellow-legged Gull flew west at 09:00.

Waxwings:

Loughborough: 165 in Freehold Street.

Melton Mowbray: 25+ in Clark Drive.

Thurlaston: 20+ at midday.

Leicester: 10 at 48 Guilford Road (between A6 London Road & Stoughton Road) this afternoon.

Saturday 25th

Waxwings:

Loughborough: 33 at the top of Park Road, also 18 at Sainsbury's car park.

Burbage: 30+ at the junction of Far Lash/Brookside.

Market Harborough: 10 in Victoria Avenue.

Braunstone: 5 at Avery Hill.

Friday 24th

Cossington Mill: female Scaup still on the River Soar near Cossington Mill.

Waxwings:

c50 flew north over the A6 c1.5 miles north of Market Harborough near the B6047 roundabout at 09:40.

Thursday 23rd

Rutland Water: 24 White-fronted Geese, Whitwell.

River Soar: female Scaup between Wanlip North Lakes & Cossington Mill.

Waxwings:

Melton Mowbray: up to 60 between the junction of Sage Cross Street/Bentley Street & Norman Way.

Loughborough: c60 in Freehold Street at 15:25.

Little Bowden, Market Harborough: c50 still in Ashley Way.

Barrow upon Soar: 35 still in Sileby Road.

Oadby: c30 in Ash Tree Road (off A6 Glen Road) briefly at 14:35.

Harby: 1 near the canal just north-east of the village at 15:00.

Wednesday 22nd

Cossington Meadows: Bittern walking along edge of reeds by the Moor Pool at 13:00.

Waxwings:

Mountsorrel: c100 in Kenilworth Drive; c30 in Loughborough Road by the Toyota garage; 20 in Halstead Road; 15 in Kingfisher Drive (may be some overlap in flocks).

Melton Mowbray: 70+ moving between the car park by Argos in St Mary's Way and the Police station in Sage Cross Street.

Market Harborough: 50 in Ashley Way, by the park.

Loughborough: c30 in Freehold Street; 10 in Shelthorpe Road & 10+ in Park Road/Jetcott Avenue.

Barrow upon Soar: 22 in Sileby Road.

Birstall: 20+ in Queensgate Drive, on the green at 14:00.

Tuesday 21st

Rutland Water: 24 White-fronted Geese, 3 Smew & 2 Scaup off Normanton Church; 5 Whooper Swans at the dam + 32 Bewick's Swans flew over.

Eyebrook Res: 40 Whooper Swans north of the island this morning.

North Luffenham airfield: male Merlin at 14:00.

Albert Village Lake: 2 adult Caspian Gulls + 7 Yellow-legged Gulls.

Waxwings:

Barrow upon Soar: 110 in Sileby Road.

Markfield: 46 in Launde Road (off the A50 Field Head roundabout).

Loughborough: 44 in Park Road/Jetcott Avenue area, also 23 in Belton Road by the canal.

Little Bowden, Market Harborough: 40 in Ashley Way.

Melton Mowbray: 21 at junction of King Street & Sage Cross Road.

Measham: 19 in Greenfield Road.

Littlethorpe: 14 in The Paddocks at 10:45 - flew off south-east at 10:50.

Monday 20th

Waxwings:

Barrow upon Soar: 100+ in Sileby Road.

Groby: 29 in Pymm Ley Lane/Close at 13:30.

Loughborough: 15 in Freehold Street (off Queen's Road near junction with Empress Road) & 10 at Charnwood Water (just east of the A6 on the east side of the town).

Anstey: 12+ in Hazlehead Road/Link Road area.

Measham: 8 in Greenfield Road (also 7 Bramblings).

Frisby GP: 5 this morning.

Mountsorrel: 3+ in Linkfield Road.

Sunday 19th

Rutland Water: 22 Bewick's Swans, North Arm (flew off north-west at 14:20); total of 23 Smew around the reservoir on the wildfowl count.

Eyebrook Res; 3 redhead Smew & female Scaup on small patch of open water by the dam. Most of the rest of the reservoir frozen.

Watermead CP North: Red-crested Pochard on the waterski pit, also Brambling at the feeding station. Nearby, redhead Smew on the River Soar at Cossington Mill.

Waxwings:

Coalville: 100+ still around Red House pub but mobile.

Groby: 43 in Glebe Road by Elizabeth Woodville School.

Loughborough: c30 still around Empress Road area. 7 (possibly part of the same flock) at the junction of Belton Road & Staveley Court at 15:10.

Leicester: c20 in New Park Street this afternoon, then flew towards Narborough Road.

Ashby-de-la-Zouch: 6 in Pennine Way.

Earl Shilton: 4 in the Co-op car park late afternoon.

Saturday 18th

Rutland Water: Bittern, Lagoon 3.

Cossington Meadows: Bearded Tit heard at the Moor Pool.

Albert Village Lake: 2 Caspian Gulls.

Waxwings:

Coalville: 100+ still around the Red House pub.

Burbage: 31 in The Meadows, off Woodland Avenue, this morning.

Loughborough: 30+ still around Empress Road area.

Friday 17th

Eyebrook Res: drake Green-winged Teal at the inflow.

Watermead CP Birstall: Bittern on Key Lake this afternoon.

Waxwings today:

Coalville: 100+ by the clock tower this morning.

Loughborough: up to 40 in Empress Road area, also 11 in Warwick Way at 11:05.

Beaumont Leys: 30 in Kingsbridge Crescent this afternoon.

Evington: 25 by the Leisure Centre on Downing Drive mid afternoon.

Shepshed: 13 at the junction of Penrith Avenue & Conway Drive this afternoon.

Thursday 16th

Waxwings today:

Burbage: 52 in The Meadows, off Woodland Avenue.

Hinckley Golf Course: 40+ this afternoon.

Barrow upon Soar: 35 in Sileby Road.

Donisthorpe: 4 at Measham Road crossroads this morning.

Wednesday 15th

Rutland Water: No sign of American Wigeon today. 2 Whooper Swans, 11 Smew (5 drakes), 5 Scaup & 5 Red-crested Pochards, South Arm; 5 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm off Barnsdale; Long-tailed Duck, Dickinson's Bay.

Watermead CP North: Bittern dropped into ditch at back of reedbed along path to Crake hide again at 16:10.

Albert Village Lake: adult Caspian Gull.

Waxwings today:

Loughborough: up to 155 in Empress Road and surrounding area; also probably part of the same flock: 50+ in Morrison's car park on Maxwell Drive, 12:30 - 12:40 and 47 in Waterside Close by the Boat Inn at 14:45.

Burbage: 43 in Winchester Drive/Woodland Avenue, but mobile.

Groby: 28, Glebe Road.

Langham: 2 in Manor Lane.

Hathern: 2 flew over Old Way at 08:47.

Tuesday 14th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still from Teal hide; 5 Black-necked Grebes, North Arm off Barnsdale.

Loughborough: up to 150 Waxwings in Empress Road and surrounding area.

Albert Village Lake: adult & 3rd-winter Caspian Gulls.

Monday 13th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon from Teal hide, also 11 Smew, 2 Scaup & 32 Red-crested Pochards around the south arm; Sanderling & Green Sandpiper at the dam.

Watermead CP North: Bittern dropped into ditch by the path to Crake hide at 16:10.

Cossington Meadows: 2+ Bearded Tits still in Moor Pool reedbed.

Waxwings today:

Loughborough: 100+ moving between Tucker Road garages and Charnwood Water from 10:15 - 11:30; 66 in Empress Road from 09:30 - 11:15 (and 39 there at 13:00), also c50 in Warner Place at the same time.

Oadby: c30 at 27 Manor Road Extension at 13:45.

Burbage: 20 in Winchester Drive.

Rutland Water: 13 between Gorse Close & Gadwall hide.

Groby: 4 in Pymm Ley Close.

Of interest, a colour-ringed bird at Coalville on Saturday had been ringed in Aberdeen on 28th November. Please look out for, and report, any other colour-ringed birds, making a note of the colour combinations and which leg(s) they are on.

Sunday 12th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still from Deep Water hide this morning; 1st-winter Glaucous Gull & 2nd-winter Caspian Gull, South Arm 3 (Lapwing hide).

Narborough: Bittern flew from reeds at north end of lake by Santander head office at 16:00.

Cossington Meadows: still 3+ Bearded Tits in the Moor Pool reedbed.

Loughborough: still 100+ Waxwings in Empress Road this morning, then smaller, mobile flocks around the area throughout the day. Best place to view from is the bridge by the Great Central Railway engine sheds.

Coalville: c145 Waxwings around the town centre (clock tower area) in several flocks, but mobile.

Shepshed: 13 Waxwings in Hathern Road.

Mountsorrel: 10 Waxwings in ash trees off West Cross Lane for ten minutes at !4:30.

Watermead CP South: 2nd-winter Caspian Gull.

Eyebrook Res: 3 redhead Smew north of the island. Nearby, 1 Short-eared Owl at Great Easton from 15:00.

Saturday 11th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon still at Lyndon reserve, also Water Pipit, 5 Smew & 2 Scaup; Long-tailed Duck still in North Arm; 15 Red-crested Pochards South Arm 3 (Gadwall hide).

Loughborough: up to 100 Waxwings by the Great Central Railway engine sheds (Empress Road/Queens Road/Bentley Close area) this morning.

Ibstock: 21 Waxwings at Sunnyside Garden Centre this afternoon.

Coalville: 30+ Waxwings in the centre of town around the Red House pub and the Post Office.

Ullesthorpe: 8 Waxwings along the disused railway line - flew south at midday.

Groby: 6 Waxwings in Glebe Road this morning.

Ashby de la Zouch: 4 Waxwings Marlborough Way/Winchester Way.

Anstey: 1 Waxwing at junction of Link Road & Burgin Road at 13:30.

Watermead CP South: adult Caspian Gull still by the car park.

Friday 10th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon from Teal hide, Lyndon Reserve. The road down to the reserve is still impassable. Also 4 Smew & 2 Red-crested Pochards.

Groby: 24 Waxwings in Glebe Road.

Ashby-de-la-Zouch: 17 Waxwings in Willesley Gardens.

Watermead CP South: adult Caspian Gull by the car park.

Thursday 9th

Rutland Water: drake American Wigeon from Deep Water hide (Lyndon reserve). NB - DO NOT attempt to drive down the steep hill to the reserve as it is very icy. Either park sensibly at the top of the hill and walk, or view distantly from Goldeneye hide on the Egleton reserve.

Watermead C Birstall: Bittern flew from reeds on the southern edge of the Nature Reserve at 07:30.

Groby: 11 Waxwings in Glebe Road mid morning at least.

Eyres Monsell: 5 Waxwings still in Sturdee Road/Pasley Road area this morning.

Melton Mowbray: 1 Waxwing in Norfolk Drive/Dorset Drive this morning.

Enderby: 1 Waxwing in Blaby Road at 12:45 before flying west towards the M1.

Shawell: 2 Caspian Gulls + 4th-winter Yellow-legged Gull on the balancing lake.

Albert Village Lake: Short-eared Owl flew west at 15:20.

Wednesday 8th

Langham: c20 Waxwings in Manor Lane.

Eyres Monsell: 1st-winter Med Gull feeding on grass verge of Glenhills Boulevard; nearby 11 Waxwings on Sturdee Road.

Barrow upon Soar: 5 Waxwings in Sileby Road till 11:45 when they flew off.

Hamilton Way: Woodcock flew over at 14:25.

Rutland Water: 2 Smew Fieldfare hide + Woodcock.

Tuesday 7th

Barrow upon Soar: 12 Waxwings on Sileby Road at 09:30.

Rutland Water: 2 Waxwings near Badger hide this morning.

Monday 6th

Rutland Water: 9 Waxwings near Egleton visitor centre; Long-tailed Duck, redhead Smew & Green Sandpiper, North Arm; Sanderling, Green Sandpiper & 9 Dunlin at the dam.

Groby: 2 Waxwings in Beaumont Green at 12:30.

Cossington Meadows: at least 1 Bearded Tit still in the Moor Pool reedbed.

Sunday 5th

North Luffenham: 40+ Waxwings around St George's barracks & the golf course, also 21 in gardens off Digby Drive, but flew off south at 12:10.

Eyebrook Res: Great Northern Diver & 14 Smew (3 drakes) off the east shore opposite the island.

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck & redhead Smew, North Arm.

Saturday 4th

Eyebrook Res: Great Northern Diver close to the east shore opposite the island, also 6 redhead Smew north of the island.

Rutland Water: Lesser Yellowlegs by Old Hall (South Arm) at 14:00, also Red-crested Pochard. Grey Phalarope still from Gadwall hide + redhead Smew, Goldeneye hide.

Thurnby: 13 Waxwings in Fern Close at c.14:00.

Barrow upon Soar: 7 Waxwings in Sileby Road.

Loughborough: 4 Waxwings at the southern end of Jetcott Avenue briefly at 10:30.

Wigston Magna: 4 Waxwings at the junction of Meadow Way & Newton Lane from 10:30 - 10:45 when they flew towards Wigston Harcourt.

Friday 3rd

Albert Village Lake: adult Caspian Gull & 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls this afternoon.

Thursday 2nd

Rutland Water: 1st-winter Glaucous Gull, South Arm 3 island + Grey Phalarope still.

Eyebrook Res: 3 Bewick's Swans + 3 Smew.

Wednesday 1st

North Luffenham: 6 Waxwings at the army base at 10:00.

Great Bowden: 3 Waxwings in a garden this afternoon.

Watermead CP North: adult Caspian Gull on the 'Pec Pit' (opposite the Hope & Anchor pub on Wanlip Road) at 10:00, also female Red-crested Pochard on the waterski pit.

Shawell Balancing Pool: 4 Yellow-legged Gulls.
