Sunday 31st

Rutland Water: Red-necked Grebe still off the dam; Black-necked Grebe, North Arm; 2 Wood Sandpipers, Bittern, 3 Garganey and 2 Black Terns, Egleton reserve.

Bardon Hill: 14 Tree Pipits flew south this morning (not all at once!), also 1 Wheatear.

Martinsthorpe: Tree Pipit south at 09:40.

Saturday 30th

Rutland Water: Red-necked Grebe still off the dam, but no sign of Spotted Crake at Lyndon today. Wood Sandpiper, 4 Garganey, 2 Greenshanks, 4 Ruff, 1 Dunlin, 3 Green Sandpipers & 3 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 1, Whinchat, Harrier hide & 5 Black Terns, South Arm.

Longmoor Lake: male and female Redstart still.

Little Stretton Pool: male Redstart still, also Whinchat in the uncut wheat field 200m beyond the pool.

Eyebrook Res: 5 Garganey at the island; Spotted Redshank, 5 Ruff, 1 Dunlin, 2 Common Sandpipers & 2 Green Sandpipers at the inflow.

Friday 29th

Rutland Water: Red-necked Grebe still off the dam, also Turnstone there; Spotted Crake still from Wader Scrape hide; 5 Black Terns, South Arm 1.

Eyebrook Res: Marsh Harrier flew south-west at 10:10; 4 Ruff, Black-tailed Godwit, Dunlin & Common Sandpiper at the inflow; 2 Greenshanks south-west of the island.

Little Stretton Pool: male Redstart still.

Thursday 28th

Rutland Water: Red-necked Grebe still off the dam (at the south end this afternoon); Spotted Crake still from Wader Scrape hide; 9 Black Terns, Manton Bay; adult Med Gull, Greenshank, LRP, 2 Common Sandpipers, 7 Dunlin & 15 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; Green Sandpiper, Lagoon 3.

Longmoor Lake: 4 Redstarts (2 males, 2 females) in the hedge north-east of the lake.

Little Stretton Pool: male Redstart this morning, past the pool, in left hand hedgerow viewed from the gas pipeline marker.

Wednesday 27th

Rutland Water: Red-necked Grebe still at the north end of the dam; Spotted Crake still from Wader Scrape hide; 2 Whinchats, Shallow Water hide; Wood Sandpiper, Fieldfare hide; Little Stint & 2 Curlew Sandpipers, Lagoon 4; Bittern, Lagoon 3; Little Gull, North Arm; Garganey, Harrier hide.

Eyebrook Res: Marsh Harrier at the inflow at 16:10, also 3 Ruff, 3 Dunlin & 1 Common Sandpiper; Greenshank at the island.

Longmoor Lake: 4 male Redstarts - one still in hedge north-east of the lake, and the others along the bridle path parallel to Heather Lane, c. SK390121. Also 3 Whinchats & 1 Wheatear.

Watermead CP South: Marsh Harrier flew south at 09:30.

Little Stretton Pool: male Redstart.

Evington: ringtail harrier sp (most likely Montagu's) flew WNW over Delaware Road, Evington at 07:30, heading towards Leicester.

Kelham Bridge: Greenshank, 2 Green Sandpipers & 1 Wheatear.

Tuesday 26th

Rutland Water: Spotted Crake still from Wader Scrape hide; summer plumaged Red-necked Grebe (a rarity these days!), Little Gull & 2 Sandwich Terns at the dam; Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper & Sanderling, Lagoon 4.

Watermead CP South: Black Tern.

Cropston Res: Black Tern still + 3 Common Sandpipers.

Longmoor Lake: 1 male Redstart still + 3 Whinchats & 1 Wheatear.

Groby Pool: 1 Common Sandpiper.

Priory Water: 1 Common Sandpiper & 1 Wheatear.

Monday 25th

Rutland Water: Spotted Crake still showing well from Wader Scrape hide, Lyndon, also Ruff & Dunlin, Manton Bay; Little Stint & Ruff, Lagoon 4; juv Little Gull, North Arm; Dunlin, Lagoon 5.

Eyebrook Res: Turnstone at the inflow briefly mid-afternoon, also 5 Garganey, 11 Dunlin & 1 Common Sandpiper. Greenshank, Green Sandpiper & 2 Common Sandpipers between the hide and the Fishing Lodge.

Cropston Res: juv Black Tern still off the dam + 3 Common Sandpipers.

Hicks Lodge: 1 Whinchat.

Sunday 24th

Rutland Water: Spotted Crake still showing well from Wader Scrape hide, Lyndon; Wood Sandpiper & Whinchat, Shallow Water hide.

Longmoor Lake: 2 male Redstarts still in the hedge north-east of the lake, also 3 Whinchats & 4 Wheatears around the site.

Cropston Res: juv Black Tern still off the dam.

Rutland Water: Spotted Crake showing well from Wader Scrape hide, Lyndon, this afternoon (photos to follow tomorrow); adult Med Gull, Wood Sandpiper & 2 Whinchats, Shallow Water hide.

Mountsorrel Meadows: Great White Egret on scrape near the viewing platform early morning at least.

Eyebrook Res: Garganey, Greenshank & Common Sandpiper at the island; 7 Dunlin & 1 Green Sandpiper at the inflow.

Longmoor Lake: 4 Redstarts north-east of the lake along the hedge parallel to the footpath, also 2 Wheatears.

Bradgate Park: female Redstart by the gate from the Anstey/Cropston footpath, by the water trough this morning.

Friday 22nd

Rutland Water: Wood Sandpiper still, Manton Bay; Black-necked Grebe, North Arm; 3 Garganey, Lagoon 1.

Eyebrook Res: Turnstone at the inflow, also 2 Garganey, Greenshank, 2 Green Sandpipers & 6 Dunlin.

Watermead CP North: Bittern from Plover hide; flew towards reedbed at 14:30.

Groby: male Redstart along the footpath from Groby Pool to Newtown Linford cemetery, at the edge of the wood.

Leighfield Fishponds: Tree Pipit flew over this morning.

Tuesday 12th

Rutland Water: 3 Turnstones flew over Lagoon 3; 14 Ringed Plovers & 6 LRPs, Lagoon 4 + Marsh Harrier over, 11 Green Sandpipers & 11 Common Sandpipers around the reserve.

Monday 11th

Cossington Meadows: Glossy Ibis still, also 4 Common Sandpipers.

Insect news

There are quite a few Clouded Yellows around the country at the moment, and I have heard of a few in Leicestershire, including one at Cossington Meadows, one in an Evington garden (not mine unfortunately!) and another in a Thornton garden today.

Cossington Meadows: Glossy Ibis on Upper Marsh this morning at least - presumably the bird from Wanlip Meadows.

Eyebrook Res: 3 Dunlin & 3 Common Sandpipers.
