Saturday 31st

Rutland Water: 2 Black Terns still, Lagoon 3, also 4 Marsh Harriers & 5 Ruff.

Eyebrook Res: no sign of Spotted Crake so far today. 1 Whinchat, 2 Greenshanks, 2 Dunlin, 3 Ruff, 1 Common Sandpiper & 4 Green Sandpipers.

Frolesworth Manor Farm: Tree Pipit flew south this morning.

Newtown Linford/Groby: 2 Wheatears in field by the cemetery.

Friday 30th

Barkestone-le-Vale: Wryneck in a private garden this afternoon.

Eyebrook Res: juv Spotted Crake this afternoon, initially in the 'island' of sedges in the middle of the inflow and viewable from the east (Rutland) side, but flew towards the east side at 17:30 and then only seen briefly at 19:00, from the gate in the north-west corner. Also 2 Whinchats in the north-east corner; 3 Ruff, 2 Dunlin & 4 Green Sandpipers at the inflow & 2 Greenshanks at the island.

Rutland Water: 4 Garganey, Manton Bay; Bittern & 2 Black Terns, Lagoon 3.

Quorn: Tree Pipit flew over this morning.

Thursday 29th

Frolesworth: female-type Redstart 300 yards north of Hill Farm, in hedge west of footpath, also female Whinchat. Please keep strictly to the footpath at this site.

Rutland Water: 2 Black Terns & 3 Black-tailed Godwits, Lagoon 3; Spotted Redshank, 3 Greenshanks & 4 Ruff, Lagoon 4; 2 Ruff & 3 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 1.

Eyebrook Res: 3 Ruff, 2 Dunlin, Common Sandpiper & 3 Green Sandpipers.

Wednesday 28th

Rutland Water: 3 Sanderlings, 6 Dunlin & 5 Ringed Plovers, South Arm 3 island; Bittern, 2 Black Terns & Black-necked Grebe, Lagoon 3; Whinchat, Black-tailed Godwit & Green Sandpiper, Lagoon 1.

Little Stretton: Redstart & 3 Whinchats still.

Eyebrook Res: 3 juv Spotted Redshanks briefly (flew off at 17:30), Greenshank, 4 Ruff, Dunlin & Green Sandpiper at the inflow; 2 Common Sandpipers at the dam.

Burrough Hill: Tree Pipit flew south this morning.

Tuesday 27th

Rutland Water: 2 Sanderling, South Arm; 2 Garganey, Manton Bay.

Little Stretton: 3 Whinchats in second hedge past the pool + Redstart 300 yards along the River Sence beyond the pool.

Groby Pool: Redstart along the footpath to Newtown Linford at the back of the pool, also Tree Pipit over this morning.

Birstall Meadows: Garganey still, also 2 Greenshanks, 3 Green Sandpipers & 3 Common Sandpipers.

Stoughton Airfield: 3 Whinchats & 1 Wheatear in field by the runway at the east end.

Frolesworth Manor Farm: Wheatear by the stables.

Monday 26th

Rutland Water: juv Black Tern, South Arm 3 (and presumed same Lagoon 3 later); Black-necked Grebe & 3 Black-tailed Godwits, Lagoon 3; Whinchat, Mallard hide + usual waders around the reserve.

Eyebrook Res: juv Spotted Redshank at the inflow, also 22 Ruff, 2 Dunlin, Green Sandpiper & Clouded Yellow.

Bardon Hill: 2 Crossbills in the pines this morning.

Watermead CP South: 3 Tree Pipits flew south this morning.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: Black-tailed Godwit & Green Sandpiper.

Sunday 25th

Rutland Water: Arctic Skua over Hambleton Peninsula mid-morning (Andy Forryan), also an unconfirmed report of a Great Skua in South Arm 3/North Arm around the same time. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. Also 17+ Black Terns, Black-necked Grebe, 1 Little Gull & Ruff, Lagoon 3; female Common Scoter, South Arm 3; Ruff, Dunlin, 2 Common Sandpipers & 2 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 1; Ruff, Greenshank & 13 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4.

Martinsthorpe: female Pied Flycatcher briefly at 11:20 in hawthorn by the footpath at SK868047.

Whitwick: Pied Flycatcher in a garden this afternoon.

Watermead CP South: 15 Black Terns this morning.

Eyebrook Res: 3 Greenshanks, 1 Ruff, 1 Dunlin, 3 Green Sandpipers & 1 Common Sandpiper.

Cossington Meadows: 2 Green Sandpipers, Upper Marsh.

Saturday 24th

Rutland Water: 3 Black Terns + 1 Black-necked Grebe, Lagoon 3.

Cossington Meadows: Garganey on Upper Marsh.

Friday 23rd

Rutland Water: 4+ Marsh Harriers flew south during the day, incluidng one male; one juv lingered. Black Tern & 2 Black-necked Grebes, Lagoon 3; 2nd-winter Little Gull, Lagoon 1; also 6 Greenshanks, 9 Ruff, 4 Black-tailed Godwits & 4 Dunlin around the reserve.

Thursday 22nd

Rutland Water: BLACK STORK over the North Arm/Burley Wood around 14:15 before drifting off north-west (John Wright et al). Second county record (first was of two birds near Husband's Bosworth in July 1991). Also 2 Black-necked Grebes, Lagoon 3; Common Scoter, South Arm 3; 2 Ruff & 3 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 1.

Birstall Meadows: Greenshank & 7 Green Sandpipers this morning.

Wednesday 21st

Rutland Water: Black Tern, Lagoon 3; 2 Turnstones, Lapwing hide; Little Gull, Lagoon 4.

Tuesday 20th

Rutland Water: Black-necked Grebe, Lagoon 3, also 2 juv Marsh Harriers over Lagoons 3 & 4 this morning.

Eyebrook Res: 2 Black-tailed Godwits, Ruff, Dunlin, 2 Green Sandpipers & 1 Clouded Yellow.

Monday 19th

Rutland Water: adult Little Gull still, Lagoon 1; Wheatear, Lagoon 4.

Sunday 18th

Rutland Water: Garganey + adult Little Gull still, Lagoon 1; Black-necked Grebe, Fieldfare hide; Turnstone, South Arm 3 island; Wood Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit & Ruff, Lagoon 3; Greenshank, 3 Ruff & 17 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4.

Eyebrook Res: Dunlin, 4 Green Sandpipers & 2 Common Sandpipers.

Saturday 17th

Rutland Water: adult Little Gull still, Lagoon 1.

Friday 16th

Rutland Water: Garganey & Little Gull, Lagoon 1.

Eyebrook Res: Marsh Harrier, Greenshank, Dunlin, 2 Common Sandpipers & 2 Green Sandpipers, also 2 Clouded Yellows.

Thursday 15th

Rutland Water: Wood Sandpiper, Garganey & Little Gull, Lagoon 1.

Frolesworth Manor Farm: male Wheatear in paddocks west of the farm.

Wednesday 14th

Rutland Water: Sanderling & Marsh Harrier, Lagoon 4.

Newton Harcourt: imm Marsh Harrier flew towards Great Glen at 19:15.

Wanlip Meadows: 1 Ruff.

Tuesday 13th

Rutland Water: Wood Sandpiper & 2 Garganey, Lagoon 1.

Birstall Meadows: 2 Garganey still + 7 Green Sandpipers.

Eyebrook Res: Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Dunlin & 2 Common Sandpipers.

Groby Pool: 1 Greenshank.

Cossington Meadows: 2 Red-crested Pochards still, Tern Pool.

Thornton Res: no sign of Night Heron in a thorough search this morning.

Monday 12th

Cossington Meadows: 2 Red-crested Pochards, Tern Pool, also Clouded Yellow in Plover Meadow near the main entrance.

No news on Thornton Res Night Heron today.

Sunday 11th

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still.

Cossington Meadows: Garganey still on Tern Pool, also 10 Green Sandpipers around the reserve.

Saturday 10th

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still.

Cossington Meadows: Garganey on Tern Pool.

Brascote Pits: 1 Green Sandpiper.

Friday 9th

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still, in bushes beyond the boathouse, also 1 Common Sandpiper.

Rutland Water: Little Tern, Little Gull, 13 Dunlin & 20+ Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; 2 Wood Sandpipers, Harrier hide, also 2 Garganey Lagoon 1.

Cossington Meadows: 3 Green Sandpipers & 1 Clouded Yellow.

Thursday 8th

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still, in bushes near the boathouse this evening.

Rutland Water: 4 Wood Sandpipers still from Harrier hide, also female Marsh Harrier this morning.

Birstall Meadows: 2 Garganey + 3 Green Sandpipers.

Wednesday 7th

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still, moving between the Stanton inflow and the fishing lodge/boathouse.

Rutland Water: female Marsh Harrier flew south over Lagoon 1 mid morning, also 4 Wood Sandpipers from Harrier hide this afternoon & 1 Dunlin. 2 Black-tailed Godwits, Ruff & Greenshank, Lagoon 3; 12+ Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4. 20+ Green Sandpipers around the reserve.

Butterfly news: a Silver-washed Fritillary (at least the 6th I've heard of in the county this summer) on Buddleia in a Queniborough garden today. Also 6 Chalkhill Blues again at Bloody Oaks Quarry (see link on yesterday's news for location/access), along with another 2 Silver-washed Fritillaries, and 2 White-letter Hairstreaks at Lax Hill, Rutland Water Egleton reserve.

Tuesday 6th

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still, moving between the Stanton inflow and the fishing lodge/boathouse.

Rutland Water: 2 Wood Sandpipers & 1 Garganey, Lagoon 1; 7 Black-tailed Godwits, Lagoon 3; Little Gull & 17 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; 3 Greenshanks, 18+ Green Sandpipers, 5 Common Sandpipers & 7 Dunlin around the reserve.

Eyebrook Res: 2 Black-tailed Godwits & 1 Dunlin.

Butterfly news: 7 Chalkhill Blues (6 males and a female) at Bloody Oaks Quarry LRWT reserve today, in the meadow area near the bench, the first county record for at least 60 years. Also a Silver-washed Fritillary there.

Monday 5th

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still, moving between the Stanton inflow and the fishing lodge/boathouse. Also 1 Common Sandpiper on the dam.

Rutland Water: 3 Little Stints, Greenshank, Little Gull, 4 Dunlin & 19+ Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; 2 Black-tailed Godwits & 6+ Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 3; Green Sandpiper & Common Sandpiper, North Arm.

Sunday 4th

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still, moving between the Stanton inflow and the fishing lodge/boathouse.

Rutland Water: Black-tailed Godwit & Ruff, Lagoon 3; Little Gull, 5 Dunlin & 5 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; Common Sandpiper, Manton Bay, plus 20+ Green Sandpipers around the reserve.

Kelham Bridge: 1 Greenshank & 1 Green Sandpiper.

Cossington Meadows: Black-tailed Godwit, Tern Pool, also 4 Green Sandpipers, 1 Common Sandpiper & 5 Ringed Plovers around the reserve.

Eyebrook Res: 5 Dunlin & 1 Green Sandpiper.

Saturday 3rd

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still, between the Stanton inflow and the fishing lodge/boathouse.

Rutland Water: Wood Sandpiper (also seen in the North Arm), Black-tailed Godwit & 2 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 1; 2 Wood Sandpipers, Manton Bay; 2 Turnstones at the end of Hambleton Peninsula; Little Gull, Greenshank, 7 Dunlin & 14 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff & 5 Green Sandpipers, Lagoon 3.

Eyebrook Res: Black-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper & 2 Dunlin.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: 2 Black-tailed Godwits.

Friday 2nd

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still, moving between the Stanton inflow and the boathouse.

Rutland Water: Whimbrel, 4 Turnstones, 3 Greenshanks, 7 Dunlin & 14 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; 2 Wood Sandpipers & 10 Green Sandpipers Manton Bay.

Thursday 1st

Thornton Res: 1st-summer Night Heron still at the Stanton end this morning, then flew towards the boathouse mid-morning. Park in the car park at the Thornton end of the dam and walk along the track for c.300 yards to view the bird roosting in willows. Also Great White Egret flew over this morning and seemed to come down at the Markfield end, but could not be found subsequently (Andy Smith).

Rutland Water: Wood Sandpiper & 7 Green Sandpipers, Manton Bay.

Shawell A5 Lagoons: 1 Turnstone this evening.

Cropston Res: 2 Greenshanks, 1 Dunlin, 3 Green Sandpipers & 1 Common Sandpiper.
