Wednesday 30th

Wanlip Meadows: Glossy Ibis this evening till 20:05 when it flew off south and appeared to come down beyond some trees (Chris Garnett).

Rutland Water: 5 Whimbrels, Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 Avocets, 7 Dunlin & 5 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; pair of Garganey still, Lagoon 3; Whimbrel, Wet Meadow; Great Northern Diver, North Arm.

Watermead CP South: Marsh Harrier flew south this morning.

Brief note about Marsh Harriers: it's recently been discovered that some males never attain full 'male' plumage, so it's not possible to say with certainty that any 'cream crown' Marsh Harrier is a female (unless it's paired with a male of course!). For simplicity, I will refer to them all as just 'Marsh Harrier' on the news page unless it's an obvious adult male.

Tuesday 29th

Rutland Water: Bar-tailed Godwit & Common Sandpiper, Lagoon 4; 2 Garganey & 3 Black Terns, Lagoon 3; Greenshank & 2 Hobbies, Lagoon 1; summer plumage Great Northern Diver, Manton Bay.

Monday 28th

Rutland Water: adult Gannet - initially in the South Arm late morning, then moved to the North Arm, but no news after about 12:30. Black Tern, Bar-tailed Godwit & 5 Whimbrels, Lagoon 4; 2 Garganey, Lagoon 3.

Common Sandpiper on canal halfway between Newton Harcourt & Kilby Bridge.

Sunday 27th

Rutland Water: Sanderling, Whimbrel, 5 Dunlin & 5 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; 3 Garganey, 1 Black Tern & 1 Hobby, Lagoon 3.

Eyebrook Res: 1 Black Tern.

Swithland Res: Long-tailed Duck & 4 Swifts.

Kelham Bridge: 1 Hobby.

Saturday 26th

Rutland Water: Black Tern, 5+ Arctic Terns, immature male Marsh Harrier & Hobby, Lagoon 3; Whimbrel, Lagoon 4, plus two more flew over near the Egleton visitor centre.

Eyebrook Res: 1 Swift.

Swithland Res: 1 Swift.

Stoughton: 1 Hobby.

Friday 25th

Rutland Water: Bar-tailed Godwit, Lagoon 4, also Whimbrel this evening.

Thursday 24th

Reasonable numbers of all common warblers around now, also Cuckoos and Wheatears reported from several sites today.

Rutland Water: pair of Garganey, Lagoon 3; 47 Black-tailed Godwits, Lagoon 4 mid-afternoon.

Eyebrook Res: Greenshank & Dunlin at the inflow, Common Sandpiper at the dam. Also report of 4 Arctic Terns this morning, and a second hand report of a male Redstart near Robbo's Cabin (in the plantation, c500 yards north-east of the dam), but no sign when looked for later.

Swithland Res: female Long-tailed Duck still on the north side.

Cropston Res: 1 Common Sandpiper.

Wednesday 23rd

Swithland Res: female Long-tailed Duck still on the north side.

Bradgate Park: Hobby & Cuckoo.

Watermead CP North: Garden Warbler.

Longmoor Lake: 14 Wheatears.

Tuesday 22nd

Eyebrook Res: 2 Sandwich Terns at the inflow early morning till 08:20 when they flew off north-east. Also 19 Arctic Terns mid-morning.

Thornton Res: male Redstart in hedge by the stony bank on the east side this evening.

Rutland Water: 3 Arctic Terns, Lagoon 3 this morning, also Grey Plover flew over.

Swithland Res: Long-tailed Duck still on the north side, also Hobby. Nearby, 4 Arctic Terns at Cropston Res.

Cossington Meadows: 2 Cuckoos and 2 Wheatears.

Wigston: report of male Blue-headed Wagtail (or Channel Wagtail) on the cricket pitch this morning.

Monday 21st

Swithland Res: Long-tailed Duck still on the north side, also Marsh Harrier this afternoon, and at least one Osprey over (singles at 08:25 and 13:05).

Rutland Water: 9 Little Gulls (8 summer adults & 1 1st-winter/summer), Lagoon 3; Bar-tailed Godwit still, Lagoon 4; female Red-breasted Merganser still, North Arm.

Little Stretton: female Redstart along path beyond the pool.

Longmoor Lake: Cuckoo & Wheatear.

Cossington Meadows: Cuckoo, Dunlin & Wheatear.

North Luffenham Airfield: 14 Wheatears.

Stoughton Airfield: 2 Wheatears.

Cropston Res: 1 Common Sandpiper.

Sunday 20th

Arctic Terns today (minimum numbers as there was evidence of movement during the day): c45, Cropston Res; 30+, Swithland Res; 16, Eyebrook Res; 7, Albert Village Lake; 6+, North Arm, Rutland Water & 3 on Lagoon 1.

Eyebrook Res: 1+ Black Tern.

Swithland Res: female Long-tailed Duck still on north side.

Rutland Water: Bar-tailed Godwit, Lagoon 4.

Wheatears: 23, North Luffenham Airfield; 1, Stoughton Airfield; 1, Charley Mill.

Saturday 19th

Rutland Water: unconfirmed report of 2 Cranes this morning, but no details (presumed flying over); 1 Swift, Manton Bay.

Bardon Hill: male and female Ring Ouzel on the mound, also 2 Crossbills in the pines this morning. Nearby, 2 Ring Ouzels & 1 Wheatear at Warren Hills/Charnwood Lodge, in the field with the trailer, also Cuckoo and Tree Pipit, Timberwood Hill.

Swithland Res: female Long-tailed Duck on the north side, also Brambling behind the dam and an Osprey flew over late morning.

Eyebrook Res: adult Whooper Swan this afternoon; flew off west at 17:05.

Watermead CP North: Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler & 3 Whitethroats.

Stoughton Airfield: 1 Wheatear.

Friday 18th

Rutland Water: pair of Garganey & 1 Arctic Tern, Lagoon 3; 2 Black-tailed Godwits & 2 Avocets, Wet meadow; 3 White Wagtails, Lagoon 4; Great Northern Diver, South Arm 3 (Fieldfare hide); female Red-breasted Merganser still, North Arm. Also Reed Warbler, Egleton reserve.

Little Stretton: male Redstart along the path past the pool this morning.

Watermead CP South: Arctic Tern & 2 drake Red-crested Pochards.

Eyebrook Res: Common Sandpiper on the dam, also Common Tern & 2 Dunlin.

Longmoor Lake: Common Sandpiper, White Wagtail & 4 Wheatears.

Stoughton Airfield: 2 Grasshopper Warblers reeling.

Thursday 17th

Rutland Water: 2 Black Terns, 2 Avocets & 4 Black-tailed Godwits, Lagoon 1; Grasshopper Warbler reeling near Badger hide; Arctic Tern, Long-tailed Duck & Cuckoo, Lagoon 3; Marsh Harrier, 6 White Wagtails, Black-tailed Godwit & Lesser Whitethroat, Lagoon 4; Great Northern Diver, South Arm; female Red-breasted Merganser still, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: Sandwich Tern at the inflow from 09:50 - 10:50 when it was flushed by a helicopter and flew off east. Also 3 Lesser Whitethroats & 2 Whitethroats.

Warren Hills: male Ring Ouzel still in field with clump of pines, also 2 Wheatears. Nearby, 3 Cuckoos, Charnwood Lodge/Timberwood Hill this morning.

Wednesday 16th

Rutland Water: Long-tailed Duck, Lagoon 3; Lesser Whitethroat near Wet Meadow.

Watermead CP South: drake Red-crested Pochard. Nearby, Whitethroat singing at Watermead CP North.

Tuesday 15th

Rutland Water: female Red-breasted Merganser still, North Arm, but no sign of Slav Grebe, Long-tailed Ducks or Great Northern Diver. 2 Scaup, Lagoon 3, also 4+ Avocets, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Green Sandpipers, 5 Dunlin & 3 tundrae Ringed Plovers around the Egleton reserve.

Eyebrook Res: female Wheatear still on grassy area just inside Alec Lane gate.

Cropston Res: Osprey still.

Monday 14th

Warren Hills: 2 Ring Ouzels and 5 Wheatears. Nearby, 2 Wheatears at Charley Mill.

Beacon Hill: 1 Tree Pipit.

Sunday 13th

Bardon Hill: 2 Ring Ouzels on the mound.

Warren Hills: male Ring Ouzel in the field with the clump of pines.

Rutland Water: Slav Grebe & female Red-breasted Merganser still, North Arm.

Stoughton Airfield: Whimbrel flew north at 10:00.

Cropston Res: Osprey still.

Longmoor Lake: 7 Wheatears.

Saturday 12th

Bardon Hill: male Ring Ouzel on the mound.

Normanton: male Redstart in hedge along Empningham Road.

Cropston Res: Osprey in tree near boathouse this morning.

Friday 11th

Rutland Water: no sign of Pied-billed Grebe today despite searching. Spotted Redshank & 6 White Wagtails, Greenshanks, 2 Avocets & 1 Black-tailed Godwit, Lagoon 4; 2 Black-tailed Godwits, Lagoon 1; Great Northern Diver, South Arm 3; 3 Long-tailed Ducks, North Arm; Crossbill over Barnsdale + White Wagtail there. Also good numbers of Sedge Warblers, House Martins & Yellow Wagtails.

Melton Mowbray: probable White Stork drifted west over John Ferneley school at c16:00.

Warren Hills: Osprey flew south early afternoon.

Eyebrook Res: 2 female Wheatears just inside Alec Lane gate, also Yellow Wagtail there + 3 at the inflow.

Thursday 10th

Rutland Water: Pied-billed Grebe still; by late afternoon it had moved into the second bay west of the Sailing Club. Park in Gibbett Lane and walk west along the track to view. Female Red-breasted Mergansers still + 3 Long-tailed Ducks, North Arm; Great Northern Diver, Old Hall; 2 Avocets, 4 Dunlin & 8 Ringed Plovers, Lagoon 4; Short-eared Owl, Lagoon 1.

Thornton Res: Common Sandpiper on the dam.

North Luffenham Airfield: 9 Wheatears.

Eyebrook Res: female Wheatear on the grassy bank just inside the Alec Lane gate.

Wednesday 9th

Rutland Water: PIED-BILLED GREBE (1st county record) in bay west of Edith Weston Sailing Club till dusk. Park sensibly along the road to the Sailing Club (Gibbet Lane) and walk west along the track and through the gate to view the bay at c. SK917055. DO NOT park in the Sailing Cub car park.

Also at RW today, the Sandwich Tern was still around - seen on Lagoons 3 & 4 and also in the North Arm, and 1 Common Tern, Lagoon 4.

Tuesday 8th

Hicks Lodge: Glossy Ibis behind the main pool till 18:55, when it flew off to the north-east and was lost from view. 2nd County record.

Rutland Water: Sandwich Tern, Lagoon 4, then 3; female Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Long-tailed Ducks & 7 Bramblings, North Arm.

Monday 7th

Watermead CP North: Great White Egret flew south near Plover hide at 19:10.

Grimston: Yellow Wagtail just south of the village this morning.

Mountsorrel: House Martin over Castle Hill this morning.

Sunday 6th

Bardon Hill: male Ring Ouzel on the south side of the mound, still present at 18:00, also 1 Redstart & 1 Whitethroat.

Sence Valley Forest Park: Jack Snipe at SK398121.

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver still, North Arm, from the anglers' car park. Also 4 Brambling, Lax Hill.

Charnwood Lodge: 1 singing Tree Pipit.

Cropston Res: Osprey this afternoon; nearby, 3+ Bramblings behind the dam at Swithland Res.

Saturday 5th

Warren Hills: now 3 Ring Ouzels in fields between main path and the trailers.

Rutland Water: female Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Long-tailed Ducks, Great Northern Diver & 3 Red-crested Pochards, North Arm.

Eyebrook Res: 1 House Martin & 2 Yellow Wagtails.

Swallows & Willow Warblers at several sites today.

Friday 4th

Warren Hills: male and female Ring Ouzel still in fields between main path and the trailers. Also 1 Wheatear.

Rutland Water: female Red-breasted Merganser & Common Tern, Burley Fishponds; 3 Long-tailed Ducks still, North Arm; Great Northern Diver, Lyndon reserve (Teal hide); 2 Black-tailed Godwits & 2 Avocets, Wet Meadow; 2 adult Med Gulls, 2 LRPs, 3 Dunlin & 1 Green Sandpiper, Lagoon 4; Sedge Warblers, Lagoon 3 & Harrier hide; Yellow Wagtail, Whitwell + Marsh Harrier flew west.

Birstall Meadows: 6 Black-tailed Godwits & 2 Green Sandpipers. Nearby, Sedge Warbler & 2 Red-crested Pochards at Watermead CP South.

Thursday 3rd

Birstall Meadows: 6 Black-tailed Godwits & 4 Green Sandpipers.

Brascote Pits: 1 Swallow north.

Ibstock: Osprey flew low north over the Co-op at 16:20.

Wednesday 2nd

Fosse Park/Grove Park: possible Black Kite flew west at 08:10.

Warren Hills/Charnwood Lodge: male & female Ring Ouzel in fields near the large pile of stones between the main path and the trailers. Also 1 Wheatear there.

Longmoor Lake: Ring Ouzel between the new car park and the hide in the long hedge at c. SK390130.

Tuesday 1st

Eyebrook Res: Sandwich Tern at the inflow till 13:10, when it flew off high to the north-west, then either it or another one at the island an hour later, last seen flying off over the dam mid afternoon. Also 1 Common Tern this morning.

Rutland Water: Great Northern Diver & Long-tailed Duck still, North Arm; 2 Avocets & 1 Green Sandpiper, Lagoon 4; Green Sandpiper, Lagoon 6.

Willow Warblers singing at several sites today (including 'lots' at Rutland Water).
